The 5G technology continues its global expansion, reaching impressive numbers. According to the latest data from 5G Americas and Omdia, the total number of 5G connections approached 2 billion by the end of the first quarter of 2024. This growth has been driven by the addition of 185 million new connections in just three months.
North America Leads the Implementation
Chris Pearson, president of 5G Americas, highlighted the strength and importance of the wireless technology sector, which continues to show robust and sustained growth worldwide. Pearson pointed out that "North America continues to lead the implementation of 5G." Currently, North America has 220 million 5G connections, representing approximately one-third of total wireless cellular connections in the region. In the first quarter of the year, North America added 22 million 5G connections.
Legacy Networks Shutdown
Kristin Paulin, senior analyst at Omdia, stated that the North America region is rapidly moving towards an infrastructure composed only of LTE and 5G. "Most operators have already shut down their legacy networks," Paulin commented. Additionally, the extensive coverage of 5G and the availability of devices at a wide range of prices are driving the adoption of this technology.
The Future of 5G and the Internet of Things
Paulin also anticipates that the Internet of Things (IoT) will play a more significant role in the adoption of 5G in the future. By 2028, the number of 5G connections worldwide is expected to reach 7.7 billion, with North America accounting for up to 700 million of these connections.
Sustained and Rapid Growth
The wireless technology sector continues to demonstrate its ability to grow and adapt quickly. The adoption of 5G is not only transforming mobile communication but also laying the groundwork for new innovations and applications in various industries. With the promise of ultra-fast data speeds, minimal latency, and massive connectivity, 5G is set to revolutionize the way we live and work.
The advance of 5G is unstoppable and is redefining the global technological landscape. The rapid adoption and sustained growth of 5G underscore the importance of this technology in the modern world. As more regions shut down their legacy networks and adopt 5G, we are entering a new era of connectivity and limitless possibilities.
