Tokyo Tech launches the supercomputer TSUBAME4.0.

The Global Scientific Information and Computing Center (GSIC) at the Tokyo Institute of Technology (Tokyo Tech) has launched its next-generation supercomputer, TSUBAME 4.0, on April 1st. This new system aims to carry on the tradition of the TSUBAME series as "the supercomputer for everyone," providing support for research and development in industry, academia, and government both in Japan and abroad.

Since the launch of TSUBAME 1.0 in April 2006, Tokyo Tech’s supercomputer series has been instrumental in various scientific and technical fields. The new TSUBAME 4.0, located at the Suzukakedai Campus, extensively utilizes graphics processing units (GPUs), resulting in a 5.5 to 20 times improvement in performance and ease of use compared to its predecessor, TSUBAME 3.0.

TSUBAME 4.0 stands out for its high performance in double precision 64-bit calculations, primarily used in scientific and technical computations, reaching 66.8 petaflops. Additionally, in medium precision 16-bit calculations, commonly applied in artificial intelligence, it achieves 952 petaflops, making it the second most powerful supercomputer in research and education institutions in Japan, only behind "Fugaku."

Specifications of TSUBAME 4.0:

  • Number of computing units: HPE Cray XD665, 240 units
  • Processor: AMD EPYC 9654 (96 cores) × 2 units per node
  • Main memory: DDR5-4800 768 GiB
  • GPU: NVIDIA H100 SXM5 94GB HBM2e × 4 units per node
  • High-speed network: InfiniBand NDR200 200 Gb × 4 units
  • Local storage: 1.92 TB NVMe SSD
  • Shared storage: HPE Cray ClusterStor E1000

To commemorate the start of operations, GSIC held an inauguration ceremony and guided tour at the Suzukakedai Campus on April 18, with around 100 guests in attendance. During the event, GSIC Director Toshiya Ito delivered an opening speech, followed by academic presentations by Tokyo Tech professors, highlighting the significant acceleration of research expected with TSUBAME 4.0.
