The Russian telecommunications company Rostelecom is in negotiations to acquire a data center in Moscow, according to Kommersant. The potential agreement would involve the purchase of a 25,000 square meter data center with capacity for 4,000 racks in Medvedkovo, currently owned by the developer PNK Group.
The estimated value of the transaction is around 19,000 million rubles (approximately 24 million dollars). PNK Group has two data centers with a total capacity of 72MW, both opened in 2023. One of these centers, with capacity for 2,500 racks, is already operated by Rostelecom.
The other data center, which Rostelecom is considering acquiring, is currently operated by 3Data, a subsidiary of PNK that was included in a U.S. sanctions list earlier this year. It is suggested that this move could increase Rostelecom’s value in preparation for a possible initial public offering (IPO) later this year.
3Data has 23 data centers in Moscow and is developing or managing facilities in Vladivostok, Novosibirsk, Ekaterinburg, Stavropol, and Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk. Meanwhile, Rostelecom operates data centers in Moscow, Novosibirsk, St. Petersburg, Udomlya, Ekaterinburg, Murmansk, and Chita, with plans for another 55MW hyperscale data center in Moscow and a facility in Armenia. Rostelecom’s subsidiary, Rostelecom-Data Centre, operates 21,000 racks across Russia.
There have been rumors that Rostelecom’s data center unit could go public later this year.
