Vodafone Connects Crete to the India-Europe-Xpress Submarine Cable (IEX), Strengthening International Connectivity

Vodafone has connected the Greek island of Crete to the India-Europe-Xpress (IEX) submarine cable system, marking a significant advancement in digital connectivity for the Mediterranean region. This new connection has been established in Tympaki, located in the southern part of the island, providing an alternative connection route in a strategically located area away from the north, where the majority of submarine cables in the Mediterranean have traditionally been concentrated.

The IEX system, which spans nearly 10,000 kilometers, is one of the key intercontinental telecommunications infrastructures, connecting Mumbai to Europe and extending eastward to Singapore. This cable passes through several key points, including Oman, Djibouti, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt, as well as France, Italy, and Greece, consolidating a network that links Asia, Europe, and Africa.

Increased Capacity and Resilience in Crete

The establishment of a new landing station in southern Crete not only enhances the island’s connectivity capacity but also strengthens the resilience of its telecommunications infrastructure. This station will be available for other projects and providers, expanding global connectivity options and attracting new investments to the region, benefiting both Crete and Greece as a whole.

With this addition, Vodafone expands the reach of its 2Africa submarine cable project, which currently connects various parts of Africa, Asia, and Europe. The 2Africa system, with Vodafone as a strategic partner, has already made 11 connections, including key points in the UK, Portugal, and South Africa, reinforcing the company’s global presence.

Vodafone: A Pioneer in Submarine Cable Systems

Vodafone’s expertise in submarine cable systems dates back to 1870, when it installed its first telegraph cable in Porthcurno, Cornwall. Since then, it has continued to expand, becoming one of the leading investors in submarine cable infrastructure. Currently, Vodafone has stakes in around 80 systems that reach over 100 countries, establishing itself as a leader in international connectivity.

This new Vodafone infrastructure in Crete not only enhances the island’s connectivity with the rest of the world but also strengthens its strategic position in the Mediterranean, providing alternative connection routes and ensuring the continuity of data traffic in a key region for global digital exchange.
