Verisign will raise prices for .com domains by 7% for September 2024.

The historical domain market like .com is set to see increases in price for registrations and renewals by its manager Verisign, so they can increase their income year after year. The .com domain registration will increase from September 1, 2024. This adjustment will raise the annual fee from $9.59 to $10.26, marking a 7% increase. This was notified during Verisign’s 2023 financial results presentation and aligns with the company’s contractual ability to apply a price increase in each of the last four years of its six-year renewal contract.

Increase in .com Price to $10.26 by Verisign

Verisign (NASDAQ: VRSN) has decided to increase the wholesale price of .com domain names to $10.26 starting from September 1, 2024, currently at $9.59. This adjustment represents Verisign’s last opportunity, under the current contract, to increase the price by 7% in one of the last four years of the agreement. Unless the U.S. government intervenes, the price is expected to remain at $10.26 for the next two years.

Current .com domain owners have the opportunity to avoid this increase by renewing their domains in advance for up to ten years at today’s prices, but it is also unknown if a change in manager in the .com domains could lead to a future price decrease.

Plummet in Verisign’s Domain Base Attributed to China

Verisign highlighted China as the cause of a notable reduction in domain name registrations. The total new registrations of .com and .net during the quarter were 9 million, down from 9.7 million and 9.9 million in previous quarters.

The total number of .com and .net domains managed by Verisign decreased by 1.2 million names during the quarter, ending at 172.7 million, also below the 173.8 million domains at the end of 2023. The explanation behind this decline is the significant loss of 2.2 million domains in China during 2023, which without this setback would have resulted in domain base growth last year.
