TÜV Rheinland, a global leader in certification and testing, introduced its new “Visual Comfort” certification standard for laptops at CES 2025. This pioneering star rating system evaluates the impact of screens on eye health. Major brands such as Asus, Dell, HP, and Lenovo are already implementing or planning to adopt this standard.
A Clear Standard for Eye Comfort
Following the success of its certification for desktop monitors launched in November 2023, TÜV Rheinland expands its scope with a specific assessment system for laptops. This five-star system provides a detailed analysis of:
- Image Quality.
- Ambient Light Management.
- Eye Protection Technologies.
- User Guidelines.
The process includes 15 technical parameters that have been shown to directly impact visual comfort, incorporating innovations such as intelligent brightness control and intelligent color temperature control, which earn additional points for the products.
Ratings and Their Implications
Laptops must achieve at least three stars to obtain certification. Each level represents:
- Three Stars: Ensures basic image quality and an acceptable user experience.
- Four Stars: Recognizes products with advanced ambient light management and outstanding performance.
- Five Stars: Certifies exceptional image quality and the best user experience under changing light conditions.
This system enables consumers to make informed choices when selecting products, while also pushing manufacturers to continuously improve their device design and technology.
A Standard for Demanding Users
Designed for professional users, multimedia designers, and consumers seeking an optimal visual experience, this standard helps identify laptops that prioritize eye health without compromising image quality. “Our goal is to provide rigorous standards that not only benefit consumers but also promote technological innovation,” commented Yang Jiajie, Vice President of Electronics and Electrical Services at TÜV Rheinland for the Asia-Pacific region.
