TSMC Begins 2nm Chip Production in Taiwan and Receives Approval to Manufacture in the U.S.

TSMC, the Taiwanese semiconductor giant, is making significant strides in the development of its 2-nanometer (nm) manufacturing node. The company has received approval from Taiwanese authorities to manufacture chips using this technology at its facilities located in Arizona, United States. Meanwhile, in Taiwan, TSMC is preparing to begin trial production of these chips ahead of schedule, marking a milestone in the global race for advancements in semiconductor technology.

Production in Taiwan: The Start of a New Era

According to TSMC, the Baoshan and Kaohsiung factories in Taiwan will start trial production of 2 nm chips this month. This node represents a technological evolution that promises greater energy efficiency and increased transistor density, essential characteristics to meet the needs of sectors such as advanced computing and next-generation mobile devices.

The company has noted that the demand for 2 nm wafers exceeds that of the 3 nm chips, prompting TSMC to plan for the use of a third facility to meet market needs. Initially, production is expected to reach 40,000 wafers per month, with the goal of doubling this figure in 2024, reaching 80,000 units per month.

U.S. Facilities: The 2 nm Node Crosses Borders

In parallel, TSMC has also received the green light to manufacture 2 nm chips at its Arizona facilities. Although production in the United States will not start immediately, the development of these facilities will require an estimated investment of $30 billion for equipment acquisition and infrastructure expansion.

Taiwanese authorities have emphasized the strategic importance of this authorization, highlighting the relevance of maintaining TSMC’s global competitiveness. The Taiwanese Minister of Science and Technology stated that the first wafers produced in the United States could hit the market in 2025, further solidifying the company’s presence in the North American market.

Apple Leads Demand for 2 nm Chips

As usual, Apple will be the first customer to receive chips manufactured using TSMC’s 2 nm node, reinforcing the close collaboration between the two companies. Following Apple, Qualcomm and MediaTek, key players in the mobile processor market, will also leverage this technology for their high-end products.

A Challenge of High Costs and High Demand

While the advance to 2 nm represents a significant achievement, it also poses major challenges. The costs associated with developing new nodes have skyrocketed, complicating the implementation of increasingly advanced technologies. However, the high demand for these chips underscores their strategic importance for the next generation of technological devices.

With these moves, TSMC reaffirms its leadership in the semiconductor sector, positioning itself at the forefront of technological innovation and responding to the growing demands of the global market.
