The Conselleira of Environment and Climate Change, Ángeles Vázquez, has highlighted the crucial role of technological companies like Altia and its data center in the fight against climate change in Galicia. During her visit to Altia’s facilities in Vigo, Vázquez emphasized the company’s contribution to improving the region’s resilience and maintaining its leadership in environmental actions.
Climate Neutrality Commitment
Ángeles Vázquez pointed out that Altia was the first major Galician technology company to join the Alianza Galega polo Clima in October of last year. This initiative reflects Altia’s commitment to assessing and managing environmental aspects in all of its workplaces.
The conselleira was accompanied by Ana Ortiz, the Xunta’s territorial delegate in Vigo. The visit is part of the Galician Government’s program of meetings to evaluate the progress of entities that have joined the Alianza Galega polo Clima. Vázquez highlighted the importance of intensifying public-private collaboration to address environmental challenges and committed the support of the Xunta de Galicia to the business and social fabric.
Galicia’s Climate Strategy
In 2019, the regional government approved the Estratexia Galega de Cambio Climático e Enerxía 2050, developed through an Integrated Regional Energy and Climate Plan for 2019-2023. This plan has allowed Galicia to make significant progress in the fight against climate change, with 139 measures implemented and an investment of 1.140 billion euros. Currently, more than 90% of the planned planning and investments have already been made, and a new plan for 2024-2030 is being developed to consolidate Galicia as the region with the highest carbon dioxide absorption in Spain.
Achievements in Emission Reduction
Galicia is the Spanish community that has achieved the greatest reduction in polluting emissions since 1990, with a 60% decrease. Additionally, it is the region with the highest carbon dioxide absorption capacity, capturing one out of every five tons in Spain. In the last four years, net greenhouse gas emissions in Galicia have decreased by 19.5%, tripling the Spanish and European averages.
Altia’s Role
Ángeles Vázquez highlighted that Altia actively promotes sustainability through recycling and reusing materials, contributing to resource conservation and waste reduction. Last year, the company managed to reduce its electricity consumption by 70% and its greenhouse gas emissions by 30%, as well as donating over 750 kilos of waste for reuse.
Alianza Galega polo Clima
The Alianza Galega polo Clima, which now has around 150 partners, includes about 100 companies, the three Galician universities, the five port authorities of the community, several clusters, foundations, charities, sports clubs, and professional associations. The alliance seeks to promote public-private collaboration to accelerate the adoption of sustainable practices and achieve climate neutrality in Galicia.
Commitment to Sustainability
The Conselleira of Environment and Climate Change concluded by emphasizing the importance of continuing to work with the partners of the Alianza Galega polo Clima to weave joint strategies that contribute to environmental sustainability and the fight against climate change in Galicia. The “Resilient Galicia” initiative offers specialized technical support to entities integrated into the alliance, reinforcing the region’s commitment to a sustainable future.
Altia, as an example of good environmental practices and a pioneer in technological sustainability, continues its commitment to the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals, demonstrating that it is possible to grow sustainably and securely while contributing to environmental protection.
