The telecommunications sector in Spain continues to show sustained growth, according to the latest data published by the National Commission of Markets and Competition (CNMC). In July 2024, the mobile phone market reached a significant milestone by surpassing 60 million lines, marking a 2.2% increase compared to the previous year.
Market distribution
The competitive landscape of the sector continues to be dominated by three major operators. Movistar, Vodafone, and MASORANGE account for 90.2% of the mobile phone lines in the market. This consolidation reflects the strong presence of these telecommunications giants in the Spanish territory.
Portability and growth
Market dynamics are evident in the portability data. In July, there were 462,246 operator changes, a significant number that remained below the threshold of 500,000 monthly movements. Movistar and the Virtual Mobile Operators (OMV) achieved a positive balance in portability, while Vodafone and MASORANGE experienced net losses.
The segment of mobile voice lines with broadband showed robust growth, reaching 52.87 million lines, representing a 2.6% increase compared to the previous year.
Advancement of fiber optic
In the fixed connectivity area, fiber optic to the home (FTTH) continues its expansion. July closed with 15.5 million FTTH lines, registering a monthly increase of 94,405 connections. Movistar leads this segment with a 35.6% market share, equivalent to 5.5 million lines.
Fixed telephony and wholesale services
In contrast to mobile growth, fixed telephony experienced a slight contraction, losing 6,328 lines in July and ending the month with a total of 17.72 million lines. Fixed number portability also showed a significant decrease, with 99,185 changes, 49.3% less than the same month the previous year.
In the wholesale market, there were 2,772,634 NEBA local lines counted, while the NEBA indirect access service (FTTH and copper) accumulated 1,154,109 lines, with the vast majority (1,144,052) corresponding to fiber.
In summary, the data presented by the CNMC reveal a telecommunications sector in constant evolution, with a clear shift towards mobile and fiber optic technologies. The sustained growth in these segments suggests a continuous trend towards high-speed connectivity and mobility, aspects that will continue to define the future of the telecommunications market in Spain. via: CNMCData
