Telefónica to Manage the New Data Center of the Community of Madrid: A Commitment to Digital Efficiency and Sustainability

The infrastructure, valued at 24.5 million euros, will centralize all data from the regional ministries and will be powered 100% by renewable energy.

The Community of Madrid has officially awarded Telefónica the contract for managing its new Data Processing Center (DPC), a key project in the modernization of public digital services, with a budget exceeding 24.5 million euros. This next-generation DPC will centralize all data from regional ministries, consolidating a strategic infrastructure for the regional government.

The contract has an initial execution period of ten years, extendable up to a maximum of twenty. It is part of the Strategic Plan 2022-2026, and according to the Minister of Digitalization, Miguel López-Valverde, it represents “a milestone in the digital transformation process of the Community of Madrid and a firm commitment to the efficiency and security of digital services provided to citizens.”

### A Green, Secure, and Connected DPC

The new data center stands out for its innovative technical design, conceived under the highest standards of security, availability, and energy efficiency. It will be powered 100% by renewable energy, thereby reinforcing the environmental commitment of the Madrid administration.

The infrastructure will feature excellent connectivity and an integrated ecosystem of providers, facilitating access to cloud services and promoting interoperability among various areas of administration. The unification of data in a single DPC will allow for more efficient and secure management, reducing fragmentation and improving the response times of public systems.

### Fujitsu to Administer the Health DPC

Alongside the award to Telefónica, the Government Council of the Community of Madrid has also approved a contract with Fujitsu Technology for the administration and operation of the data centers of the Madrid Health Service (SERMAS). With an investment of nearly 18 million euros for a period of 36 months, the contract includes managing infrastructure, communication networks, storage systems, security, and access control.

The SERMAS data will also be hosted in Telefónica’s new DPC, further solidifying this infrastructure’s role as the central node for digital administration in Madrid.

### A Public-Private Data Center Model

The choice of Telefónica as the provider for this data center illustrates the collaborative model between the public sector and leading tech companies to accelerate the digitalization of administrations. Telefónica will bring its experience in managing critical infrastructures, while the Community of Madrid ensures compliance with the most demanding requirements for cybersecurity, data sovereignty, and sustainability.

This new DPC not only strengthens the digital resilience of the Community of Madrid but also aligns with the digital transformation and ecological transition goals promoted by the European Union in its digital agenda and the Next Generation EU plan.

The launch of the center is expected in the coming months and is anticipated to serve as a model for other autonomous communities seeking to modernize their technological infrastructure without losing control over their strategic data.
