Telefónica Spain adopts Red Hat OpenShift as a standard platform to transform its network and IT

Red Hat, a global provider of open source solutions, has announced that Telefónica Spain has adopted Red Hat OpenShift as a common platform for managing its IT workloads and cloud-native network functions (CNFs). This strategic decision marks a significant step in the operator’s technological modernization.

As part of the standardization process, Telefónica is also integrating Red Hat OpenStack Services on OpenShift, aiming to transform its virtualized infrastructure within a unified environment. This architecture enables integrated management of virtual machines and cloud-native applications, which can run simultaneously, while facilitating the scalability of 5G services and edge solutions.

Greater agility, efficiency, and faster deployment

With the deployment of OpenShift, Telefónica simplifies the management of complex technology environments and improves its responsiveness to market demands. The platform supports applications designed for the most advanced network technologies and applies cloud-native methodologies that promote automation at both the system and network levels.

As part of its progressive adoption strategy, all new workloads will be deployed on OpenShift, reinforcing flexibility, resilience, and operational efficiency while maintaining the high performance required for cutting-edge 5G services. Additionally, the hybrid architecture allows scaling workloads across different environments, including Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services (AWS), and Google Cloud.

Reduced times and improved service

Currently, a significant portion of customer management processes for the residential segment are already operating in production on OpenShift. The operator has drastically reduced capacity scaling times —which previously could take weeks and are now achieved in seconds—.

Moreover, application deployment time has been cut from eight hours to just 90 minutes, helping to minimize incidents and reduce potential service degradation.

The adoption of a common platform also enables cost optimization, less need for highly specialized training, and the elimination of internal silos, fostering greater collaboration among teams. OpenShift centralizes management of updates, logs, and security monitoring, providing end customers with a more stable network and a faster rollout of new services.
