The Taiwan Semiconductor Research Institute (TSRI) under the National Applied Research Laboratories, has announced the acquisition of its first full-architecture quantum computer, the IQM Spark, developed by IQM Quantum Computers, a global leader in building superconducting quantum computers. The delivery and installation of the system is scheduled for the second quarter of 2025.
A Key Step Toward Quantum Innovation
With the acquisition of the IQM Spark, a high-fidelity 5-qubit quantum computer, TSRI aims to enhance research and education in quantum computing in Taiwan. This strategic advancement reinforces the country’s commitment to developing advanced technologies in low-temperature CMOS and quantum computing, positioning Taiwan as a key player in this emerging field.
The IQM Spark will enable TSRI to explore solutions that enhance the development of large-scale quantum processors, which are essential for implementing error correction, a fundamental challenge in the development of quantum computing. Additionally, IQM will provide technical support for hardware integration and research initiatives, consolidating this collaboration as a key effort in building Taiwan’s quantum ecosystem.

The Director General of TSRI, Professor Tuo-Hung Hou, emphasized the significance of this collaboration:
“The acquisition of our first full-architecture quantum computer is a crucial step for Taiwan in the global race for quantum computing.
