SUSE introduces an open source typeface

In a move that reflects their commitment to innovation and open source software, SUSE, the renowned open-source solutions company, has launched their own official typeface. This new font, simply named “SUSE”, is presented as a versatile and modern option for users around the world.

A Font that Speaks the Language of Innovation

The SUSE typography, designed by the renowned typographer René Bieder, stands out for being a sans serif font that uniquely combines geometric and monospaced characteristics. This fusion not only reflects the company’s visual identity, but also offers exceptional clarity and readability in both digital and print media.

Ivo Totev, SUSE’s Director of Innovation, expressed his excitement about the launch: “We are pleased to announce the release of the official SUSE typeface, aptly named ‘SUSE’. The SUSE font family supports over 200 languages of the Latin base.” Totev added: “Now we look more SUSE than ever. Publishing our official font family as open source is the obvious choice for SUSE, and that is exactly what we have done.”

Versatility and Accessibility

The SUSE font family includes a wide range of styles, from Thin to ExtraBold, including ExtraLight, Light, Regular, Medium, SemiBold, and Bold. This variety allows for great flexibility in design, adapting to different needs from headlines to body text.

True to their open-source philosophy, SUSE has released the font under the SIL Open Font License 1.1. Users can find all the technical details in the company’s GitHub repository. Additionally, the font is available in the SUSE and openSUSE repositories, as well as on Google Fonts, making it easy to download and use in web projects.

A Typographic Future for SUSE

Although not yet implemented as the default font for SUSE and openSUSE, all signs point to this being the next step. The new font joins other popular options in the open-source world, such as Canonical’s Ubuntu or GNOME’s Cantarell.

With this release, SUSE not only offers a new tool to designers and developers, but also reaffirms its position as a leader in innovation within the open-source ecosystem. The SUSE font promises to be a distinctive element in future technological and design projects, carrying with it the spirit of collaboration and openness that characterizes the open-source community.
