Six Trends That Will Shape the Future of Cloud According to Gartner

Here’s the translation:

Gartner Identifies Key Challenges and Opportunities in Cloud Computing Toward 2029, with a Focus on Artificial Intelligence, Sustainability, and Digital Sovereignty.

During the Gartner IT Infrastructure, Operations & Cloud Strategies conference held in Sydney, the technology analysis firm presented six major trends that will transform cloud computing in the next four years. According to Gartner experts, the cloud will transition from being merely a technological tool to becoming a central element in business transformation.

“These trends are accelerating the shift of the cloud from a technological enabler to a true business disruptor,” explained Joe Rogus, Consulting Director at Gartner.

1. Cloud Dissatisfaction

Although cloud adoption continues to rise, not all implementations are successful. Gartner estimates that by 2028, 25% of organizations will experience significant dissatisfaction with their cloud adoption, due to unrealistic expectations, suboptimal implementation, or runaway costs.

The key recommendation is to define a clear strategy from the outset and establish an effective governance model.

2. Rise of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning

Gartner predicts that 50% of cloud computing resources will be dedicated to AI workloads by 2029, up from less than 10% currently. Hyperscale infrastructure providers (like AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud) will drive this change by integrating foundational capabilities and creating data ecosystems—both real and synthetic—for model training.

The demand for AI and ML will mark a radical shift in how data center strategies and multicloud environments are designed.

3. Multicloud and Cross-Cloud Deployments

The multicloud approach—working with multiple cloud providers—is becoming increasingly common, but more than 50% of organizations will not achieve the expected results due to a lack of interoperability.

The solution lies in designing distributed applications and cross-cloud models that enable collaborative workload execution across different clouds and local environments.

4. Industry-Specific Cloud Platforms

More than 50% of organizations will utilize industry-specific cloud platforms by 2029, according to Gartner. These vertical solutions allow for faster scaling in sectors such as healthcare, manufacturing, finance, or energy.

Rather than replacing existing systems, these platforms should be viewed as strategic extensions that drive innovation without incurring technical debt.

5. Digital Sovereignty

The rise of artificial intelligence, data privacy regulations, and geopolitical tensions are prompting companies to protect their critical data and workloads from foreign jurisdictions.

Gartner anticipates that more than 50% of multinationals will adopt digital sovereignty strategies by 2029, up from less than 10% today.

The key will be identifying the legal and operational requirements of each organization and choosing the right mix of solutions and providers to meet them.

6. Sustainability in the Cloud

The increasing energy consumption by AI workloads compels users and providers to share the responsibility for sustainability. Regulators, investors, and customers are demanding greater transparency and environmental commitment.

It is expected that more than 50% of organizations will prioritize sustainability in their technology purchasing decisions by 2029. However, the challenge goes beyond emissions; sustainability must align with business objectives and provide measurable value.

The Cloud: From Technology to Business Necessity

For Gartner, the future of the cloud is both inevitable and transformative. Organizations that can anticipate, adapt their strategies, and align their technological goals with new market demands will be better positioned to seize the emerging opportunities.
