Samsung Electronics has organized in Madrid the first ‘Innovation Campus Summit: AI for a Better World’, an event that brings together experts in artificial intelligence (AI) to discuss how this technology can improve various aspects of society. The meeting is part of the educational program Samsung Innovation Campus, focused on training young people in AI and improving their employability.
Commitment to inclusive and safe AI
Alfonso Fernández Iglesias, Iberia CMO & Head of Direct to Consumer at Samsung Electronics Iberia, highlighted the company’s commitment to the development of inclusive and safe AI. According to a study cited by Fernández, 67% of respondents want more advice on how to improve the future using AI, while 63% want to learn more about its responsible uses.
Educational challenges in the era of AI
Senén Barro, director of CiTIUS-Center for Research in Intelligent Technologies at the University of Santiago de Compostela, pointed out the need to rethink the current educational model to adapt it to the new technological reality. Barro emphasized that the current system, based on memorization and reproduction, is not adequate in the face of the abilities of machines in these aspects.
Impact projects based on AI
During the event, various projects were presented that use AI to improve people’s quality of life:
– AccessRobots: A robot designed to assist people with disabilities in complex environments such as airports and hospitals.
– CHAN-TWIN: A digital twin project to develop sustainable tourism models in natural spaces.
– MISSION IRYCIS 2030: A program of the Ramón y Cajal Institute for Health Research to implement new therapies and medical products using AI.
– Technology with Purpose: Samsung initiative including projects like Impulse, to help people with speech difficulties, and Unfear, which reduces stress in people with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
Education and training in AI
The event also addressed the importance of education in AI:
– The National Institute of Educational Technologies and Teacher Training (INTEF) presented a guide on the use of AI in the educational field.
– The AISKILLSLAB project was announced, which has trained nearly 300 teachers in the use of AI.
– Samsung announced a collaboration with the School of Industrial Organization (EOI) to train unemployed young people in new technologies.
Book ‘AI for a Better World’
Samsung presented the book ‘AI for a Better World’, in collaboration with the Polytechnic University of Valencia, which compiles end-of-studies projects from AI courses taught under the Samsung Innovation Campus framework. This initiative has trained more than 700 young people in software and AI-based job skills since 2020.
The ‘Innovation Campus Summit: AI for a Better World’ event aims to establish itself as an annual meeting for organizations interested in collaborating in the application of AI to improve society.
