Renfe launches the VI Acceleration Call for Startups: Focus on Artificial Intelligence and Quantum Computing

Renfe has announced the opening of the VI Call for its startup acceleration program, TrenLab, with the aim of fostering innovation in the railway sector. This new edition focuses on key emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and quantum computing, in order to transform and optimize various aspects of its operations.

This year’s program presents four specific challenges for startups, aiming to find innovative solutions that enhance customer experience and operational efficiency in the railway sector. Interested parties have until September 10th to submit their proposals.

Challenges of the VI Call

1. Transformation of Customer Service in Stations Based on AI
Renfe is looking for technological solutions that, through advanced use of artificial intelligence, can revolutionize the customer service system in stations. The goal is to create comprehensive service centers that offer quick and personalized responses to passengers.

2. Improvement of Real-Time Customer Information
The railway operator is interested in solutions that provide real-time information before, during, and after trips, enhancing customer interaction through instant feedback and active listening.

3. Automation and Digitalization of Railway Maintenance
Innovations are required to automate and digitize data capture during rolling stock maintenance, in order to improve efficiency and accuracy in inspection and technical documentation management.

4. Operational Efficiency with Quantum Computing
Renfe is looking to implement quantum algorithms to optimize decision-making in critical areas such as scheduling, resource allocation, and cybersecurity.

Support and Rewards for Startups

The winning startups will receive €50,000 to develop a pilot and will have the opportunity to secure a contract with Renfe worth up to €1 million. Additionally, they will benefit from a network of experts and mentors, specialized training, masterclasses, and workshops on communication, sales, legal advice, and investments.

Since its inception, TrenLab has evaluated up to 1,200 startups, of which 22 have been accelerated. Renfe has invested over €2.3 million in these pilots and has formalized contracts worth €4.7 million with companies such as Visualfy, Greemko, AllRead, and Limmat Group.
