Raúl Aledo (Aire Group): “The arrival of 5G SA could divide operators into two levels”

In a recent interview with InnovaSpain, the CEO of Grupo Aire, Raúl Aledo, reflected on the challenges and opportunities facing the telecommunications sector in a time of rapid technological evolution. Under his leadership, Grupo Aire has expanded its focus from telecommunications operator to provider of comprehensive services, including OMV, cybersecurity, multicloud, and voice over IP solutions. One of the highlights of the conversation was the arrival of 5G SA (stand-alone) and the potential impact it could have on the market.

Aledo warned that the deployment of 5G SA could create a division between “first and second tier” operators due to differences in access and costs. “Europe promotes free competition, but allows it to diminish under the pretext of insufficient investment to deploy full 5G,” he noted. The CEO emphasized the need for regulators to ensure fair conditions to prevent market fragmentation.

Furthermore, the executive underscored the importance of cybersecurity in the context of the new European directive NIS2, which requires higher data protection standards. He also discussed the potential of artificial intelligence, acknowledging that many companies still view this technology with some trepidation.

Regarding the future of data centers and cloud computing, Grupo Aire is investing in cutting-edge infrastructure to bring connectivity closer to businesses and improve latencies, especially in edge computing environments. Aledo highlighted that the goal is to democratize access to these technologies, allowing SMEs to also benefit from digitization and technological transformation.

Finally, in the realm of telephony, Aledo advocated for greater interoperability in voice over IP networks, removing barriers between providers to achieve smoother and more accessible communications.
