The Retired U.S. Army General, Paul M. Nakasone, Joins OpenAI’s Board of Directors, Bringing His Extensive Cybersecurity Experience and Strengthening the Organization’s Commitment to Security.
Last week, OpenAI announced the addition of Retired U.S. Army General Paul M. Nakasone to its Board of Directors. A recognized expert in cybersecurity, Nakasone’s addition reflects OpenAI’s commitment to security and underscores the increasing importance of cybersecurity as the impact of artificial intelligence technology continues to expand.
As an initial priority, Nakasone will join the Board’s Security Committee, which is responsible for making recommendations on critical security decisions for all of OpenAI’s projects and operations. The security of OpenAI’s systems, from safeguarding large AI training supercomputers to the security of models and sensitive data entrusted by clients, is crucial to achieving the organization’s mission. As AI technology becomes more capable on the path to artificial general intelligence (AGI), OpenAI strengthens itself against increasingly sophisticated cyber threats.
Nakasone’s insights will also contribute to OpenAI’s efforts to better understand how AI can enhance cybersecurity by quickly detecting and responding to threats. OpenAI believes that AI has the potential to provide significant benefits in this area for many institutions that are frequently targeted by cyberattacks, such as hospitals, schools, and financial institutions.
“Artificial intelligence has the potential to have a hugely positive impact on people’s lives, but it can only fulfill this potential if these innovations are built and deployed safely,” said Bret Taylor, OpenAI’s Board Chairman. “General Nakasone’s unparalleled experience in areas like cybersecurity will help guide OpenAI in its mission to ensure that artificial general intelligence benefits all of humanity.”
General Nakasone shared his perspective on joining the Board, stating, “OpenAI’s dedication to its mission closely aligns with my own values and experience in public service. I look forward to contributing to OpenAI’s efforts to ensure that artificial general intelligence is safe and beneficial for people around the world.”
Retired U.S. Army General Paul M. Nakasone is a prominent expert in cybersecurity, technological advancement, and global cyber defense. During his army career, he played a key role in establishing the U.S. Cyber Command (USCYBERCOM). He was the longest-serving leader at USCYBERCOM and also led the National Security Agency (NSA), where he was tasked with protecting the digital infrastructure of the United States and enhancing the country’s cyber defense capabilities. He has served in command and staff positions at all levels of the U.S. Army, with assignments in elite cyber units in the United States, South Korea, Iraq, and Afghanistan.
With the addition of General Nakasone, OpenAI reinforces its commitment to security and ethics in the development of artificial intelligence technologies, ensuring that these advancements are implemented safely and beneficially for all of humanity.
