Moderna and OpenAI expand their collaboration to revolutionize mRNA medicine with artificial intelligence.

Advances in medical innovation, Moderna has announced the expansion of its collaboration with OpenAI, aiming for a complete integration of artificial intelligence in all areas of the organization. This partnership seeks to accelerate the development of mRNA treatments that could save lives, marking a significant milestone in the field of biotechnology.

Stéphane Bancel, CEO of Moderna, stated that the company aims to “redesign every business process” with the help of AI, allowing their team of 3,000 people to work as if they were 100,000. From predicting optimal drug doses to improving internal communication and branding, AI is set to supercharge every aspect of Moderna.

Since early 2023, Moderna has implemented its own instance of ChatGPT, named mChat, built on the OpenAI API. With internal adoption exceeding 80% since its launch, this tool has fostered a culture of AI that led to the implementation of ChatGPT Enterprise and its advanced capabilities, such as advanced analytical analysis and image generation.

These custom GPTs are now integrated into all business functions of Moderna—from legal to research and manufacturing—acting as assistants that complement employees’ roles, enhancing their productivity and supporting them in their mission to maximize the impact of mRNA medicines.

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, expressed his enthusiasm for the collaboration: “Moderna is leading the way by empowering all its employees to use AI in solving complex problems. We look forward to continuing to collaborate with Moderna to bring a new generation of medicines to patients in need.”

Moderna has deployed over 750 GPTs in the company, driving automation and productivity. Among them is the Dose ID GPT, which uses the Advanced Data Analysis feature of ChatGPT Enterprise to evaluate the optimal dose of vaccine selected by the clinical study team.

This expansion of the collaboration between Moderna and OpenAI not only accelerates the development of innovative treatments but also serves as a model for other companies on how to leverage ChatGPT and AI in their operations. This approach could set a new standard in AI integration in the healthcare industry and beyond, promising profound transformations in how businesses operate and deliver value.
