Microsoft has announced that it will be retiring the privacy protection (VPNA VPN, short for Virtual Private Network) feature from Microsoft Defender for Individuals starting on February 28, 2025. The company explained that the decision is based on an assessment of the usage and effectiveness of this feature, with the aim to invest in new areas that better meet users’ needs.
Despite the removal of the privacy VPN, Microsoft Defender will continue to provide protection for data and devices, along with tools for monitoring identity theft and credit security in the United States. However, the company recommends that Android users manually remove the VPN profile from their devices after the deadline, as Defender will cease to use it for protection.
Web protection on iOS will continue operating with a local VPN
For iOS users, Microsoft clarified that the web protection (anti-phishing) within Defender will continue to use a VPN to filter malicious links. However, this will be a local (loop-back) VPN, different from the privacy protection feature that will be removed.
What changes for Microsoft Defender users
Starting on February 28, 2025, the privacy VPN will no longer be available, but other Defender features will remain active:
- Threat protection on devices
- Identity theft monitoring (only in the U.S.)
- Security alerts and credit monitoring (U.S.)
Subscribers to Microsoft 365 Personal and Family will continue to have access to protection for up to five devices per user, in addition to specialized assistance in case of identity theft, with coverage of up to $1 million in insurance for legal fees and identity restoration experts.
Android users will need to manually remove the Defender VPN
While users of Windows, iOS, and macOS do not need to take any action, Android users will need to manually remove the VPN profile after the feature is removed. Although failing to do so would not affect device performance, Microsoft recommends deleting it to avoid unnecessary profiles in the system settings.
Steps to remove the Microsoft Defender VPN on Android:
- Open the phone’s Settings app.
- Look for the VPN option in the settings.
- If Defender’s privacy feature was active, the Microsoft Defender profile will appear in the list of VPNs.
- Tap the information icon and select Remove.
Microsoft is pursuing a new security strategy
The decision to retire the privacy VPN reflects a shift in strategy for Microsoft Defender’s security. The company has expressed its intention to redirect efforts towards new protection tools, although it has not specified what features will be added in the future.
For now, Defender will remain integrated within Microsoft 365 subscriptions, offering a set of cybersecurityCybersecurity solutions are essential in the digital age solutions for protecting data and devices in an increasingly complex digital environment.
