Mexico will have a new AWS infrastructure region in Querétaro.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced the installation of its new infrastructure Region in Querétaro, Mexico, marking a milestone in the company’s global expansion. With an investment of 5 billion dollars, this new Region becomes the first of its kind in the country and is expected to begin operations in early 2025.

What is an AWS Region and How Does It Work

An AWS Region is much more than a simple data center. It is a complex infrastructure made up of multiple Availability Zones (AZs), each composed of one or more data centers. These Regions are designed to offer high availability, low latency, and robust security, ensuring that data is protected and accessible at all times.

In total, AWS has 33 Regions worldwide, and the new Region in Querétaro positions Mexico as a key player in the company’s global strategy. Each AWS Region includes a minimum of three Availability Zones, which have independent power, cooling, and physical security, as well as redundant networks to ensure continuous and fast connectivity.

Commitment to Sustainability

AWS has also emphasized its commitment to sustainability in the new Region. The company has taken a holistic approach to minimize energy and water consumption, and in Querétaro, it has opted for an air-cooled data center design, avoiding the use of water for cooling. This strategy aims to reduce environmental impact and ensure that operations are as efficient as possible.

The company has set a goal to use 100% renewable energy by 2025 and has stated that cloud-optimized workloads can be up to four times more efficient compared to those performed on local infrastructures.

Benefits for Mexico and Latin America

The arrival of the AWS Region in Mexico will not only benefit local organizations with lower latency and access to advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and Internet of Things (IoT), but will also have a positive impact on the local economy. According to a study by FTI Consulting, cloud computing already contributed 64.3 billion dollars to Mexico’s GDP in 2023, and supported 2.3 million jobs in the country.

The installation of the Region in Querétaro will generate new highly skilled jobs in areas such as data center engineering, technical support, networking, and security. AWS is currently hiring for these roles, and interested individuals can check for job opportunities on their official website.

A Milestone for Technological Innovation

The Country Manager of AWS in Mexico has highlighted that the Querétaro Region represents a significant advancement for the company in its mission to provide cutting-edge connectivity solutions. The infrastructure will enable Mexican organizations to innovate more quickly and adapt their operations to the needs of the current digital environment.

“We are excited to see how the new AWS Region in Mexico drives digital transformation in the country and contributes to local economic development. This project reflects our commitment to innovation and service excellence,” the executive stated.

With this new Region, Mexico consolidates its position as a key hub in AWS’s global infrastructure, offering local companies the necessary tools to face the challenges of the digital future.
