The company drives innovation in networks with a faster, more secure, and sustainable infrastructure
MasOrange, the largest telecommunications operator in Spain, has achieved a technological milestone by becoming the first operator in the world to establish an 800 Gbps IP connection using DWDM technology and the SRv6 protocol. This advancement positions the company at the forefront of connectivity, preparing for the growing demand for data driven by technologies such as 5G SA, 6G, IoT, and artificial intelligence.
This innovation has been made possible by the combination of three key technologies: IPoDWDM, 800 Gbps transmission, and the SRv6 protocol. While each of these technologies had been tested separately, it is the first time they are integrated within a commercial operator’s network.
Speed and efficiency for the future of telecommunications
The record connection has been implemented in Valladolid and enhances the user experience with higher speed, lower latency, and greater stability. A practical example of its capability would be the ability for a population of up to 20,000 people to simultaneously conduct 4K video conferences, stream Full HD series, game online without interruptions, and listen to high-quality music, all using a single fiber connection.
Moreover, this advancement not only optimizes connectivity but also reduces energy consumption by up to 80% in the IP backbone network, aligning with MasOrange’s commitment to sustainability and energy efficiency.
Collaboration with ZTE for high-performance infrastructure
The development of this connection has been supported by ZTE, a leader in technological innovation, marking a turning point in the evolution of IP networks. This connection allows for faster traffic rerouting in case of incidents, ensuring a more resilient and less crash-prone network.
According to Juan Francisco Martínez, director of IP Network at MasOrange, “We are proud to be the first operator in the world to establish an 800 Gbps IP connection using DWDM technology and SRv6 protocols. This advancement reinforces our leadership in innovation and meets the growing demand from our customers for faster, more reliable, and cyber-secure digital services.”
Key benefits for customers
MasOrange has implemented this network technology with significant advantages for users:
- Ultra-fast connections: Thanks to the integration with SRv6, data transmission is optimized, achieving lower latency and unprecedented speed.
- Greater resilience: The technology allows for quick traffic redirection in case of failures, avoiding service interruptions.
- Enhanced security: SRv6 ensures greater control over routing and establishes advanced measures to protect communications against cyberattacks.
- More sustainable network: Infrastructure optimization allows for energy consumption reduction of up to 80%, according to ZTE data.
MasOrange leads the transformation of networks
To achieve this milestone, MasOrange has integrated the M6000-SE router from ZTE into its infrastructure, enabling the handling of large volumes of data at high speed and low latency. This innovation strengthens its commitment to the evolution of telecommunications networks and its leadership in advanced connectivity.
Just a few months ago, the company had already set another world record by completing the first data transfer at 1.2 Tbps on a commercial optical transmission network using a single wavelength.
On March 4 at 17:30, MasOrange will present this new technology at ZTE’s booth at the Mobile World Congress, solidifying its role as a benchmark in innovation within the telecommunications sector.
