The Digitalization Department of the Community of Madrid, led by Miguel López-Valverde, has announced that before the end of the year, it will reinitiate the tender process for the contract to construct a new Data Processing Center (DPC). This project responds to the growing demand for technological infrastructure for the regional administration and its autonomous agencies, involving an investment of 32.7 million euros over the next ten years.
The new data centerA data center or data processing center (DPC) … “public” aims to replace the current setup, which has so far relied on two rented data centers, one primary and one backup, where all the digital infrastructure of the Community is housed. According to the Department, this current structure has become outdated, especially due to the capacity limitations of the backup center and the growing need to host new services and technologies.
A Forward-Looking Project
The tender for the new data center is not the first attempt to carry out this project, and it may not be necessary according to many industry sources, as there are enough options in the community to have space in data centers. Earlier this year, the Community of Madrid had already launched a tender for the contract, which was declared void because the three participating companies failed to meet all the requirements set out in the conditions. However, the authorities of the Community are determined to move forward with the project, which is estimated to cost 3.2 million euros annually (including VAT).
The new data center will not only serve as a physical space to house technological infrastructures, but will also incorporate public cloud services, allowing for greater flexibility and operational capacity. The regional government indicates that this cloud integration will represent a “very significant qualitative leap” in the modernization of the region’s digital infrastructure.
Goals for 2025
The recently approved General Budget Bill for 2025 includes this ambitious digital transformation project as one of the main challenges for the upcoming year. The Madrid administration aims to equip the new DPC with advanced infrastructure and tools to ensure its full operational capacity progressively. This will enable, according to sources from the regional government, an increase in operational capacity and reinforce contingency and backup measures.
In addition to the new DPC, in 2025, the rollout of infrastructure in Cloud mode will continue, a strategy aimed at optimizing resources and ensuring the availability of digital services under maximum security and efficiency conditions. The combination of a new data center with the implementation of cloud technologies responds to the need to adapt to an increasingly complex and demanding digital environment, where resilience and responsiveness are essential.
A Commitment to Digitalization
With this investment in technological infrastructure, the Community of Madrid reaffirms its commitment to the digital transformation of public administration, a process that will not only improve the quality of services provided to citizens but also optimize the use of public resources. Digitalization and the integration of cloud solutions will facilitate greater adaptability to technological changes and a more agile response capacity in situations of high demand or contingency.
This modernization project for the Madrid DPC also reinforces the strategy of cybersecurityCybersecurity solutions are essential in the digital age…, as by integrating cloud service usage, the administration will be able to implement advanced data protection protocols, essential in a context where digital threats are constantly evolving.
Thus, Madrid joins other communities and countries that have recognized the importance of investing in next-generation digital infrastructure to meet the demands of the 21st century, laying the groundwork for a more efficient, secure, and future-ready administration.
