DE-CIX, the world’s leading Internet Exchange operator (IX), has released its Annual Report for the year 2023, confirming strong and sustained growth in global revenue and data exchange worldwide.
Global revenues continued to grow, reaching 63 million euros, an increase of 8 million (+14%) compared to 2022. Reflecting the trend of previous years, the number of connected customers at DE-CIX internet exchange points grew by 14% to over 140 terabits, with over 3,600 networks connected worldwide. With nearly 60 exabytes of data traffic worldwide in 2023, DE-CIX experienced a 23% growth in total traffic volume.
In 2023, there were significant milestones for the southern European region of the company. Recognized as the flagship for this region, the Madrid exchange point recorded a peak data flow of 1.5 Tbit/s, a 44% increase from 2022 levels. Meanwhile, DE-CIX Barcelona tripled its data flow during peak hours, and client bandwidth increased by 50%. DE-CIX Marseille saw a 65% increase in connected client capacity, reaching 2.9 Tbits. DE-CIX Lisbon also increased its connected client capacity by 42% and more than doubled its maximum data flow in 2023.
DE-CIX Southern Europe is positioning itself as a leader in cloud enterprise work. The continuous growth in traffic is preparing the company for the anticipated increase driven by this technology’s development, reaffirming its commitment to providing seamless connectivity in the digital age. Beyond its operational achievements, DE-CIX Southern Europe is dedicated to global knowledge exchange to contribute to the further development of the internet worldwide. In collaboration with the Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF) in Barcelona, DE-CIX launched the Interconnection Academy globally in April 2023. The courses are interactive, fully online, free, and open access.
Interest in DE-CIX’s enterprise-oriented services grew significantly in 2023, with a 50% year-over-year increase in cloud connections and nearly 4 terabits of cloud capacity reserved by the end of the year. The company expanded its network to enable global companies to build their worldwide networks using DE-CIX infrastructure. Additionally, in 2023, the company created a Customer Success Management, Presales, and Consulting team to support the design, implementation, and delivery of custom solutions for large-scale enterprises and clients, providing a unique service in the enterprise interconnection market.
“With the continued success and growth of DE-CIX worldwide in 2023, we see 2024 as a turning point in the company’s history. Twelve years after our first international expansion, we have achieved a crucial geographical presence worldwide to reach our strategic goals,” commented DE-CIX CEO Ivo Ivanov. “2023 was, in many ways, a decisive year,” the executive said, adding, “Advances in generative artificial intelligence and quantum computing, among others, have led to a rapidly evolving technological landscape with enormous potential for social and economic benefits, where data is key to unlocking innovation.”
In terms of geographic expansion, DE-CIX launched platforms in 14 additional markets in 2023, increasing its reach to over 50 markets worldwide. The company’s infrastructure spans North America, Africa, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. Throughout the year, six DE-CIX-owned IX access networks (five in Nordic countries and one in India) and three DE-CIX service IX access networks (two in Africa and one in Jordan) became operational. The global footprint also added the first three of the new dedicated DE-CIX Cloud Exchange models, in the US and Japan, and technical work was carried out on six other platforms, scheduled to be operational in early 2024.
