The expansion of the AMS-1 campus will add 10 MW of critical capacity and solidifies its role as one of the most sustainable and connected digital hubs in Europe.
The American multinational Iron Mountain has officially announced the expansion of its data center campus in Amsterdam (AMS-1), adding 10 megawatts (MW) of additional critical IT capacity. This expansion reinforces its footprint in one of the most connected and sustainable digital ecosystems on the European continent.
The company, which specializes in information management, colocation, and secure storage services, already had an installed capacity of 13.1 MW at the campus. With this new phase, expected to come online in the second quarter of 2027, the campus will reach a total of 30 MW over a built area of 40,000 square meters.
A data center with a sustainable focus
The AMS-1, located in Haarlem just 22 kilometers from Amsterdam, stands out for its use of 100% renewable energy, as well as its ultra-efficient operations and low environmental footprint approach. The facility was pioneering in the Netherlands for having an entirely green energy supply and has received awards for its carbon credit solutions for clients.
Among its certifications are ISO 27001, ISO 50001, ISO 14001, ISO 9001, and PCI-DSS, making it one of the centers with the industry’s most comprehensive compliance portfolio.
Interconnection and digital ecosystem
AMS-1 has positioned itself as a strategic node in Europe thanks to its high connectivity density, with access to more than 60 network operators, managed service providers, and major internet exchange points, including AMS-IX and NL-ix. The network also offers direct on-ramps to major public cloud providers and software-defined networking (SDN) infrastructures, ensuring a neutral and efficient interconnection.
According to Iron Mountain, the data center has reached peak traffic levels of up to 1.63 Tbit/s, placing it among the most active colocation facilities in the Amsterdam metropolitan area.
Future-ready infrastructure
The expansion responds to the growing demand for digital infrastructure services from hyperscale companies, multinationals, and cloud sector clients. In the company’s words, AMS-1 is prepared for both large deployments and local businesses needing a few critical racks.
With this investment, Iron Mountain solidifies its position as a key player in the European data center landscape, betting on a model that combines energy efficiency, world-class security, and robust connectivity, essential pillars at a time when exponential growth in data traffic, artificial intelligence, and digitization require large-scale sustainable solutions.
