Indra has reached an agreement with Redeia Corporación for the acquisition of 89.68% of the capital of Hispasat, one of the leading satellite operators in Spain, for a total amount of 725 million euros. With this operation, Indra strengthens its position in the aerospace and defense sector, consolidating its presence across the entire space value chain.
📌 A strategic move in the aerospace sector
With this acquisition, Indra takes control of Hispasat and its subsidiary Hisdesat, which is dedicated to governmental communications in defense, security, and intelligence. This move responds to the growing strategic importance of space for both civil and military applications, in the context of a global transformation in the sector.
🔹 Financing the operation: Indra has secured a 700 million euro credit and will cover the rest with available liquidity.
🔹 Pending approvals: The transaction is subject to regulatory authorization in Spain and other key markets, as well as the approval of Indra’s shareholders.
🔹 Creation of Indra Space: a key player in the European industry
The purchase of Hispasat marks a turning point in Indra’s strategy, moving away from its traditional profile as a technology consulting firm to establish itself as a global aerospace giant.
📌 Indra Space is born, a new division that will integrate all of the group’s space capabilities:
✔️ Deimos → Design and manufacturing of satellites.
✔️ Hispasat → Civil communications, with a strong presence in Latin America.
✔️ Hisdesat → Military communications and observation satellites (reinforced with SpainSat NG).
✔️ Indra → Management of ground systems and defense, with experience in large international programs.
This move positions Spain as a relevant player in the European space sector, allowing Indra to compete in major projects such as IRIS2, Galileo, and Copernicus, and even lead consortia in the future.
🌍 A paradigm shift in the space industry
Indra’s strategy aims not only to reinforce the technological autonomy of Spain and Europe, but also to enter the market of the new commercial space. The increasing focus on constellations of satellites in low and medium orbits (LEO/MEO) suggests that the company will not be limited to traditional geostationary satellites.
📌 Advantages of the acquisition for Spain and Europe:
✔️ Greater independence in satellite infrastructure.
✔️ The possibility to compete with global players like SpaceX or OneWeb.
✔️ Expansion of surveillance and defense capabilities in a complex geopolitical environment.
🔎 Next steps and expectations
The operation still needs to go through various regulatory processes, both in Spain and in other countries where Hispasat operates. If everything proceeds as expected, the integration of Hispasat into Indra should be completed by the end of 2025.
With this move, Indra not only redefines the Spanish technological and space landscape, but also opens a new chapter in which Spain could become a reference in the European space industry.
