The National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) and Huawei Technologies have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the establishment of a state-of-the-art Cloud Data Center, as part of the Huawei Global Connect 2024 Conference. This agreement aims to strengthen NBP’s digital infrastructure by implementing high-level cloud services in a Tier-III certified data center.
The new data center will not only provide advanced data storage and management solutions, but also ensure operational efficiency and security of NBP’s financial system. Huawei will provide specialized equipment for the timely implementation of the project, as well as continuous support for the maintenance and operation of the center. As part of the collaboration, bank personnel will receive practical training and technical documentation to ensure smooth integration of the project into NBP’s operations.
Commitment to digital transformation
During the signing of the agreement, Rehmat Ali Hasnie, President of NBP, emphasized the importance of partnering with Huawei to carry out this project. “This alliance is a testament to our commitment to adopting advanced technologies that enhance our operational efficiency,” Hasnie said.
Amin Manji, Chief Technology Officer of NBP, highlighted the relevance of Huawei’s expertise in transforming the bank’s data management capabilities and ensuring the reliability of its systems. “Huawei’s expertise will be crucial in ensuring the reliability of our systems and transforming our data management capabilities,” he noted.
Advancement in data infrastructure in Pakistan
Currently, Pakistan has 22 data centers located in three major markets: Lahore, Karachi, and Islamabad, managed by operators such as PTCL, Multinet, and Supernet. The collaboration between NBP and Huawei adds to other recent advancements in the sector, such as the data center launched in June 2023 by the University of Turbat, whose initial phase coincided with the deployment of a 1MW solar project.
This Huawei-NBP project represents a step forward in modernizing the country’s data infrastructure, enhancing its ability to face the growing challenges in the financial and technological sectors. It also positions NBP as a leader in implementing advanced technological solutions within Pakistan’s banking system.
Huawei expands its influence in the region
The agreement with NBP follows another significant contract that Huawei recently secured, valued at 3 million dollars, to provide cloud computing solutions to the United Bank for Africa (UBA), one of the largest banks in Nigeria. These partnerships reflect Huawei’s continuous expansion in emerging markets, solidifying its position as a leader in digital infrastructure development in Africa and Asia.
With this new project, the National Bank of Pakistan and Huawei aim to not only optimize data management and increase operational efficiency, but also drive the technological development of the country, positioning Pakistan at the forefront of digital transformation in the region.
