HP HOPE: Technology to Bridge the Digital Divide for the Most Disconnected Youth

In an era where technology is essential for learning and progress, HP has launched an ambitious global program, HP HOPE, aimed at equipping underprivileged youth with refurbished computers and digital skills. This initiative, which began in Spain with the help of HP volunteers during the pandemic, seeks to accelerate digital equity and transform lives worldwide.

HP HOPE operates with a circular and sustainable approach, refurbishing devices that would otherwise be discarded. These computers are given a second life and donated to nonprofit organizations and schools. Through a strategic partnership with YMCA Europe, the program has already reached 26 countries and benefited over 52,000 children, including 6,000 young people in Spain.

How does HP HOPE work?

The program focuses on four fundamental pillars:

  1. Device Collection: HP receives donated computers from customers and partners.
  2. Refurbishment: The devices are sent to certified partners who wipe the data and refurbish the equipment to ensure optimal performance.
  3. Distribution: The equipment is delivered to organizations like YMCA, which integrate them into educational and digital literacy programs.
  4. Sustainable Impact: Obsolete components are recycled, promoting a circular economy.

“HP HOPE not only provides computers; it delivers opportunities and hope. This program demonstrates our commitment to society, helping young people overcome barriers and reach their full potential,” states Inés Bermejo, General Director of HP Iberia.

A Global Commitment with Spanish Roots

HP HOPE was conceived in Spain during the toughest moments of the COVID-19 pandemic, when the lack of access to technology exacerbated educational inequalities. What began as a local response to NGO requests quickly evolved into a global program.

In Spain, over 100 refurbished computers have been donated to centers managed by YMCA, benefiting thousands of young people through digital learning modules, job training, and community access.

“The school closures showed how technology can be both a barrier and a solution. With HP HOPE, we seek to be part of the solution,” notes Bermejo.

A Global and Sustainable Impact

The program is part of HP Renew Solutions, which aims to accelerate a circular IT future. HP estimates that, by 2025, its initiative will help close the digital divide for 150 million people worldwide. This effort not only has a social impact but also an environmental one, reducing electronic waste and promoting sustainable practices.

A Call to Action

HP invites businesses and customers to collaborate by donating their unused devices. These refurbished PCs not only benefit local communities but also reinforce the global commitment to a more equitable and sustainable future.

“This program is a journey of solidarity and hope. We invite more companies to join this cause and give life to technologies that can make a difference,” concludes Bermejo.
