Henry Samueli, Founder of Broadcom, Awarded the IEEE Medal of Honor 2025

IEEE, the world’s largest professional technical organization dedicated to advancing technology, has announced that Henry Samueli has been named the recipient of the IEEE Medal of Honor 2025. Samueli is the first recipient of the award, which has been increased to a $2 million prize, in recognition of his pioneering work in the development and commercialization of analog communication circuits and mixed-signal processing. His contributions have driven the growth of broadband communication technologies and wired and wireless networks that connect the world today.

A Global Impact on Telecommunications

As a professor of electrical engineering at UCLA, Samueli conceived digital signal processing architectures for broadband communication chips. Later, by founding Broadcom, he developed the first digital modem chipset for cable set-top boxes, laying the groundwork for UltraHD, HDTV transmission, and high-quality video streaming. Today, Broadcom is a global leader in semiconductor technologies for communications.

“Henry Samueli’s vision and innovations in communication technology have driven the development of products used by virtually everyone in the world,” said Kathleen Kramer, President and CEO of IEEE in 2025. “From smartphones to IoT devices, Samueli has created new ways to connect humanity.”

Recognition of a Career in Innovation and Philanthropy

In addition to his technological impact, Samueli is recognized for his philanthropic work in STEM education. He has supported initiatives to promote teaching in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, committing to donate most of his fortune during his lifetime.

“Through broadband, Samueli has revolutionized global connectivity and transformed countless industries,” noted K. J. Ray Liu, chair of the IEEE Awards Ad Hoc Committee on Prestige and former IEEE president in 2022. “His philanthropy has improved the lives of many, demonstrating how technologists can leave a lasting impact.”

Award Ceremony in Tokyo

The IEEE Medal of Honor 2025 will be awarded on April 24, 2025, in Tokyo, Japan, marking the first time the ceremony will be held in this city. In addition to this award, other recognitions will be given to prominent figures in the field of science and technology.
