HDMI Forum Launches HDMI 2.2 Specification with Support for Resolutions Up to 16K and New Ultra96 Cables

The new version of the specification raises the bandwidth to 96 Gbps and introduces the distinctive Ultra96 to help consumers choose the right cable.

The consortium HDMI Forum, Inc. has officially announced the launch of the 2.2 version of the HDMI specification, a key evolution in audiovisual connectivity that marks a new milestone in image quality, transfer speed, and user experience.

The new HDMI 2.2 specification incorporates a maximum bandwidth of 96 Gbps and adopts a next-generation version of the HDMI Fixed Rate Link (FRL) technology, designed to optimize the transmission of ultra-high-quality content across multiple devices, from televisions and professional monitors to gaming consoles, home theater equipment, and augmented reality systems.

Resolutions up to 16K and extreme frequencies

Among the most notable improvements of HDMI 2.2 is support for resolutions up to 12K at 120 Hz and 16K at 60 Hz, including both uncompressed formats and full-color sampling 4:4:4 in demanding configurations such as 8K at 60 Hz or 4K at 240 Hz, with color depth of 10 and 12 bits. This enables an extraordinarily sharp, precise, and realistic visual representation.

Introducing the Ultra96 badge: more clarity for consumers

One of the main announcements from the HDMI Forum has been the introduction of the new “Ultra96” badge, a label that manufacturers can use to indicate that their devices support bandwidth of 64 Gbps, 80 Gbps, or 96 Gbps, depending on the implementation of the HDMI 2.2 specification. To ensure the proper functioning of these devices, the new HDMI Ultra96 cable will be required, specially designed to handle up to 96 Gbps.

Ultra96 HDMI Cable Label

This cable complements the current Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable, which supports configurations of up to 48 Gbps while still being compatible with many solutions in the current HDMI ecosystem. Both cables are part of the HDMI Cable Certification Program, which requires each model to be tested, validated, and come with an official certification label.

Improved A/V synchronization with the LIP protocol

The HDMI 2.2 specification also includes the Latency Indication Protocol (LIP), a technology that enhances synchronization between image and sound, particularly useful in complex setups with multiple signal hops — as occurs with A/V receivers, soundbars, or home theater systems.

Statements from the HDMI Forum

“The HDMI Forum is proud to launch the new HDMI 2.2 specification to enable greater performance capabilities and bring to life increasingly immersive solutions and products,” stated Chandlee Harrell, president of the HDMI Forum. “And the introduction of the new Ultra96 badge will help consumers ensure their products maximize their potential in terms of bandwidth and quality.”
