Swedish company leads the global ranking for business performance and portfolio strength against rivals like Huawei, Nokia, and ZTE
Technology consultancy Omdia has crowned Ericsson as the top provider in the global Radio Access Network (RAN) market in its report “Market Landscape: RAN Vendors 2025.” The Swedish firm ranks first in both evaluated dimensions: business performance and portfolio breadth and competitiveness, surpassing giants such as Huawei and Nokia.
According to the analysis, Ericsson scored 87 out of 100 in business performance and 88.7 out of 100 in portfolio strength, making it the only provider to top both categories.
Market 5G Advantage
Ericsson has solidified its position through a significant increase in 5G commercial agreements with telecom operators (CSPs) and a growing market share outside China, reaching 36% of the RAN market in 2024 in that region. This progress marks an improvement over the previous year and provides a strategic edge over Huawei, its closest competitor.
As Per Narvinger, Ericsson’s Executive Vice President and Head of Networks, states, “Being recognized by Omdia as the leading provider reflects our commitment to innovation, quality, and customer satisfaction. We will continue to lead with high-performance programmable solutions.”
Technological Leadership: Massive MIMO, Energy Efficiency, and Open RAN
The report highlights Ericsson’s leadership in its radio product portfolio, especially in Massive MIMO technologies, where it competes head-to-head with Huawei, and in the energy efficiency of its baseband units. Its AIR3266 and AIR3265 lines, along with RAN 6672 and 6655 network processors, are considered some of the most advanced in the industry.
Additionally, the company is leading in supporting the open protocol eCPRI and developing solutions compatible with Open RAN, an increasingly sought-after area by operators looking for diversification and technological flexibility.
Comparison with Main Competitors
– Huawei, despite leading the global RAN revenue share (34.2%), ranks second in business performance and portfolio due to fewer 5G agreements and new customer acquisitions compared to Ericsson.
– Nokia, third in the ranking, stands out for landing the most new customers (“new logos”) but has lost market share to competitors.
– ZTE and Samsung round out the top five, with ZTE improving its portfolio but experiencing a decline in business performance scores.
Partner Ecosystem and 2030 Vision
Ericsson has also strengthened its technology partner ecosystem, a key aspect highlighted in the report for the future of the RAN market. Collaboration with systems integrators, semiconductor manufacturers, and cloud service providers enhances its leadership position in a transitioning industry toward virtualization and interface openness.
Rémy Pascal, Mobile Infrastructure Analysis Leader at Omdia, comments: “Ericsson not only closed more 5G agreements in 2024, but its catalog, design strength, and partner ecosystem solidify its status as the industry’s absolute leader.”
Conclusion
The Omdia report confirms that Ericsson remains the benchmark provider in RAN infrastructure, thanks to a blend of technical excellence, commercial expansion, and strategic vision. In an increasingly competitive and fragmented market, its ability to lead in both innovation and execution makes the difference in the race for 5G and beyond.
