Equinix, a global leader in digital infrastructure, has announced an initial investment of 260 million US dollars for the construction of its sixth data centerA data center or data processing center (DPC) … in Singapore, named SG6. This project aims to meet the growing demand for compute-intensive capabilities driven by the expansion of technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and quantum computing in one of Asia’s most dynamic digital markets.
A Future-Ready Infrastructure
The new data center, which is set to be operational in the first quarter of 2027, will feature nine floors and provide 20 megawatts of capacity upon completion. SG6 will be part of Equinix’s global network, which consists of 268 interconnected data centers in 73 cities across 34 countries. This will enable multinational companies to seamlessly integrate additional colocation and interconnection services.
Equinix has highlighted that the design of SG6 will incorporate advanced and sustainable technologies, including:
- Advanced liquid cooling systems: optimized to manage the heat generated by high-density hardware such as GPUs used in AI applications.
- Renewable Power Purchase Agreement (PPA): collaborating with Sembcorp Industries to ensure 100% coverage of renewable energy.
- Low environmental impact construction materials: aimed at reducing the carbon footprint.
- Rainwater harvesting and highly efficient water cooling systems.
These features reinforce Equinix’s commitment to sustainability, in line with Singapore’s Green Plan 2030, a national strategy to reduce carbon emissions and promote environmentally responsible development.
Singapore: A Global Innovation Hub
The new SG6 data center arrives at a crucial time for Singapore, whose digital economy grew from SGD 58 billion to SGD 106 billion between 2017 and 2022, according to data from the U.S. Department of Commerce. Singapore’s strategic location and leadership in AI governance make it an attractive tech hub for international companies.
Yee May Leong, General Manager of Equinix in Singapore, emphasized: “Singapore is a global magnet for multinational and innovative companies. With the growing demand for intensive workloads like AI, SG6 will not only provide capacity but also enable these innovations in a responsible and sustainable manner.”
Commitment to Sustainability and Technological Innovation
Since 2020, Equinix’s data centers in Singapore have achieved 100% renewable energy coverage. SG6 will not only continue this tradition but will also raise the standards by integrating cutting-edge technologies essential for data processing demands of AI applications and advanced workloads.
Additionally, the project is part of Equinix’s broader expansion in the Asia-Pacific region, which includes recent entries into markets like the Philippines and Thailand.
The Global Impact of SG6
With this investment, Equinix reinforces its role as a vital partner for companies looking to scale their digital services while meeting sustainability goals. By providing infrastructure tailored to current and future needs, such as compute-intensive applications and AI-based solutions, SG6 will make a significant contribution to the global and regional tech ecosystem.
Equinix’s commitment to Singapore reflects not only the strategic importance of the city-state in the global tech landscape but also the growing focus on sustainable solutions for a rapidly expanding digital economy.
