Elawan Energy, a Spanish renewable energy developer, has signed a 10-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with the telecommunications company Cellnex. Through this agreement, Elawan will supply Cellnex with more than 400,000 MWh of renewable energy annually, coming from one wind project and three solar projects with a total capacity of 200 MW.
In a statement, Elawan highlighted the strategic importance of this agreement as part of its expansion in the renewable energy sector, a step that reaffirms its position as a key provider of clean energy in the market. The company currently has an operational capacity of over 1.8 GW in 16 countries and 1.1 GW in advanced development. Since its acquisition by the Japanese group Orix in 2021, Elawan has set a target of reaching 3 GW in renewable energy assets by 2025.
For its part, Cellnex reaffirms its commitment to reducing and neutralizing all its greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 with this agreement. This deal adds to the one signed in 2020 with Endesa to supply 100% of its energy needs in Spain with renewable energy.
Cellnex’s Expansion in the Infrastructure Sector
Cellnex, which currently manages over 138,000 tower sites in 12 European countries, also operates data centers in Spain, along with 24 telecommunications and data towers in the Netherlands and a significant data centerA data center or data processing center (DPC) … in the Hilversum media park. Additionally, its presence in France includes a portfolio of Edge data centers, reinforcing its position in the digital infrastructure space.
During 2024, Cellnex continued to consolidate its position in the European market with high-profile operations. In August, the company exited the Austrian market, agreeing to sell 100% of its unit in Austria to a consortium formed by Vauban Infrastructure Partners, EDF Invest, and MEAG for an amount of 803 million euros (877 million dollars).
A Long-Term Commitment to Sustainability
The agreement between Elawan and Cellnex underscores both companies’ commitment to sustainability and reducing their carbon footprint in their operations. With such strategic partnerships, Cellnex is advancing towards its goal of a fully green operation, while Elawan continues to increase its presence in the renewable energy market, establishing itself as a leader in the transition to cleaner and more accessible energy.
In a context of growing demand for sustainable energy, these types of collaborations strengthen the push toward a more responsible energy future, in line with the decarbonization goals that are shaping the agenda in Europe.
