A new study from CyrusOne, developed with the participation of over 13,000 people in countries such as the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Netherlands, Spain, Italy, France, and Germany, has revealed significant insights into public perception of data centers in Europe. According to the survey, conducted by Censuswide and commissioned by CyrusOne, 93% of respondents have a positive (51%) or neutral (42%) opinion about data centers, especially among those who live near one and are aware of its economic and social benefits.
The Economic Benefits: Key to Improving Public Perception
The CyrusOne study highlights the importance of the economic benefits that data centers bring to local communities. Two-thirds (66%) of participants recognize that these facilities create value by generating job opportunities, and 62% say they contribute to economic growth in their areas. This perception is even more favorable among those living close to a data centerA data center or data processing center (DPC) …, where support rises to 71% and 68%, respectively.
Furthermore, 83% of those who view the economic impact of data centers positively would be willing to have one in their neighborhoods, highlighting how job creation and local economic stimulation can significantly enhance the acceptance of these infrastructures.
Lack of Understanding about Their Role Creates Distrust
Despite the benefits, the study shows that understanding of the role of data centers remains limited. Only 52% of respondents correctly identified their function. Additionally, less than half (45%) associate these facilities with supporting daily-used digital applications like WhatsApp, social media, or video conferencing tools. This disconnect underscores the need for better communication from the industry to explain how data centers support modern digital life.
Investment in Community and Public Services
Another key point highlighted in the study is the importance of investing in community projects. 49% of respondents believe that contributions to projects like parks, playgrounds, or sports facilities are a significant benefit of data centers, a figure that rises to 58% in communities near these facilities.
Challenges in Perception of Data Centers
The study also identifies certain concerns regarding the impact of data centers, with the most common being high energy consumption (40%), electronic waste generation (33%), and land usage (30%). However, these concerns do not overshadow the overall positive perception, as 83% of respondents are open to changing their opinion, especially if data centers contribute to improving local employment and public services, such as bike lanes or green spaces.
CyrusOne’s Commitment to the Community
Emma Fryer, Director of Public Policy for Europe at CyrusOne, emphasizes the importance of listening to communities and acting accordingly. “Public opinion on data centers is more positive than expected. It is essential for developers and operators of these facilities to understand the needs of the communities hosting them in order to provide significant local benefits,” stated Fryer.
