CyrusOne Enters the Italian Market with a New Data Center in Milan

CyrusOne, a global leader in the development and operation of state-of-the-art data centers, has announced its entry into the Italian market with the launch of its first project in Milan. The new data center, named MIL1, will be strategically located in the municipality of Segrate, east of Milan, and will serve as a vital link between Italy, the rest of Europe, and the Mediterranean.

A large-scale project to meet growing demand

The MIL1 data center will have an IT capacity of 27 megawatts distributed across 9,000 square meters of technical space within a single three-story building. The development will be carried out in three phases, with the first 9 megawatts operational by the third quarter of 2027. This infrastructure is designed to meet the increasing demand from CyrusOne’s hyperscale customers who seek advanced and diversified capabilities across the European continent.

“This is an exciting development for CyrusOne globally,” said Matt Pullen, Executive Vice President and General Manager for Europe at CyrusOne. “Entering the Milan market is key to addressing our customers’ needs and capitalizing on long-term growth opportunities in a region where enterprise cloud adoption is still relatively low.”

Commitment to the community and sustainability

CyrusOne seeks not only to address technological needs but also to benefit the local community and protect the environment. As part of the project, the company acquired a biodiverse land of 658,628 square meters known as Golfo Agricolo, which has been allocated to the municipality of Segrate for community use. This land will become a protected ecological space for current and future generations.

Segrate’s Mayor, Paolo Micheli, celebrated this initiative: “Today is an important day for our community. Finally, Golfo Agricolo is ours, for our children and grandchildren. This victory ensures that this space will remain an ecological area for the benefit of everyone in Segrate.”

Additionally, CyrusOne has committed to funding and implementing significant public works in the area, such as installing photovoltaic panels on municipal buildings, constructing a road in the Redecesio district, and renewing Via delle Regioni, which will include sidewalk and bike lane expansions.

A focus on sustainability and energy efficiency

The new data center is designed to meet the highest sustainability standards. It is expected to achieve at least a “Very Good” BREEAM certification and to use 100% renewable energy. Furthermore, it will be equipped for the reuse of waste heat, initially utilizing it for auxiliary spaces within the center and with the option to distribute it to local third parties as needed.

Mark O’Keefe, Senior Director of Architecture at CyrusOne, commented: “We are thrilled to have made our first strategic acquisition in the Italian market. This project combines the essential requirements for the development of data centers with a clear focus on sustainability and the needs of the local community.”
