ChatGPT, OpenAI’s artificial intelligence app, has reached a new milestone by securing the top position in all three key categories of mobile stores in Spain: most downloaded (free), most profitable, and most used. This is confirmed by the latest updated rankings of apps on Google Play and the App Store, where it has surpassed giants like TikTok, Disney+, YouTube, and Tinder.
In the free apps ranking, ChatGPT holds the top spot, ahead of apps like MiDNI (National Police), Cl@ve (Tax Agency), and Threads (Meta). In the list of apps generating the most revenue, it also leads, surpassing services like Max (HBO), Disney+, and Tinder.
This success in Spain reflects a global trend. ChatGPT had already been recognized as the most downloaded app in the world during March, with over 46 million downloads that month and a 148% increase in quarterly downloads compared to 2024. The recent addition of features like AI image generation —including the viral phenomenon “Ghibli effect”— has skyrocketed its popularity on social media.
From Useful Tool to Cultural Phenomenon
What started as an assistance chatbot has evolved into a multifunctional app used for work, educational, creative, and personal tasks. Its mass adoption also translates into revenue: many users opt for paid plans to access premium features like GPT-4 Turbo, advanced image generation, or personalization tools.
OpenAI notes that the growth has been so rapid that they even had to temporarily limit some features for free users due to server overload. “The GPUs were melting,” said Sam Altman, CEO of the company.
ChatGPT thus establishes itself as synonymous with artificial intelligence among the general public, to the point that, just as it once became common to say “Google it,” now many simply say “ask ChatGPT.”
