Ceph: Enterprise Storage Leader Celebrates Success at Cephalocon 2024 and Announces DigitalOcean as New Member

The open-source distributed storage system Ceph reaffirmed its leadership in the sector during the recent Cephalocon 2024 conference held at the iconic CERN Science Gateway in Geneva, Switzerland. This annual event brought together experts, developers, and leading companies to explore the latest innovations in data storage. Additionally, the conference marked a milestone with the addition of DigitalOcean as a new Silver member of the foundation.

Cephalocon 2024: A Record Success for the Ceph Community

The 2024 edition of Cephalocon attracted over 350 attendees and set records for sponsorships and participation. This year, the event introduced the Ceph New User Workshop for the first time, which helped 48 users integrate into the ecosystem. Concurrently, the Ceph Developer Summit offered collaborative technical sessions to chart the future of the system.

Among the highlights, leading organizations using Ceph shared their experiences:

  • CERN, one of the most prestigious scientific institutions in the world, detailed how Ceph has been key to its storage infrastructure for over a decade. Its commitment to Ceph reflects the robustness and scalability of the system.
  • Clyso, a pioneer in storage, demonstrated a Ceph cluster capable of achieving 1 terabyte per second, a feat that solidifies Ceph as a competitive alternative to proprietary systems.
  • IBM highlighted use cases in critical sectors such as financial services and defense, noting how Ceph is essential for storage solutions in modern architectures like Data Lakehouses and hybrid cloud environments.
  • Bloomberg pledged to increase its participation in the Ceph community, encouraging other companies to do the same to boost the growth of the ecosystem.

DigitalOcean Joins the Ceph Foundation

The conference also marked the addition of DigitalOcean as a Silver member of the Ceph Foundation. With its expertise in cloud computing and artificial intelligence platforms, DigitalOcean aims to strengthen its commitment to open-source software.

Wade Wegner, Director of Growth and Ecosystems at DigitalOcean, commented: “We are excited to partner with the Ceph Foundation and support the developers who make Ceph a world-class storage platform.”

DigitalOcean joins a list of members that includes companies like Bloomberg Engineering, IBM, CLYSO, and Canonical, who have been instrumental in the evolution of Ceph.

Ceph: Constant Innovation in Distributed Storage

Ceph continues to lead data storage with its focus on:

  • Scalability and Efficiency: Ceph supports over 3,000 clusters and has surpassed 1 exabyte of storage utilized by its community.
  • Interoperability: It offers unified support for object, block, and file system storage.
  • Modern Use Cases: From architectures in Data Lakehouses to backup S3 solutions and cloud-native experiences in on-premise environments.

Sponsors and Next Steps

Cephalocon 2024 was made possible with the support of sponsors such as Bloomberg Engineering, IBM, CLYSO, Vultur, Canonical, and 42ON. Videos of the sessions will soon be available on the official Ceph YouTube channel, while details of the next Cephalocon event will be announced on the official community website.

About Ceph

Ceph is a distributed storage system that provides interfaces for object, block, and file systems in a single unified cluster. Based on the Reliable Autonomic Distributed Object Store (RADOS), Ceph has become a fundamental pillar for modern storage architectures. The Ceph Foundation, as part of the Linux Foundation, fosters collaboration and ongoing development across multiple industries.
