Celebrating International Girls in ICT Day: A call to close the gender digital divide.

On April 25, 2024, the world celebrates the International Day of Girls in Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), a date established by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in 2010. This celebration aims to close the gender digital gap that persists globally, influenced by multiple factors such as geographic location, economic resources, education, and language.

The gender digital gap is particularly evident in generations of women further removed from emerging technologies, limiting their participation in a field that is vital for personal and professional development in the contemporary world. To combat this inequality, it is essential to educate girls in ICT from an early age, promoting significant cultural and educational change.

Among the proposed solutions to address these disparities are:

1. Eliminating stereotypes: Challenge the perception that technologies are exclusively male-dominated and promote female role models in these fields.
2. Digital literacy: Implement government policies that guarantee digital literacy for women who have not had previous access to ICT for various reasons.
3. Empowerment from the classroom: Encourage technological education among girls to prepare them as future leaders and professionals in the sector.

A clear example of historical neglect in the technological field is the story of Hedy Lamarr, who despite her key contributions to the development of wireless communication, has been marginalized in conventional technology history narratives. Her legacy is often overlooked compared to male figures like Mark Zuckerberg or Larry Page.

The Women’s Organization of the Intersindical Confederation calls on society as a whole—including educators, families, governments, technology companies, and media—to take concrete and effective measures to help reduce this digital gap. It is imperative to recognize and value the potential of women and girls in the ICT sector to promote a more inclusive and equitable society.

The International Day of Girls in ICT is not only a celebration but also an opportunity to reflect on the necessary advancements towards gender equality in the digital realm. With events and activities worldwide, this day aims to inspire the next generation of women to embark on tech careers and play an active role in shaping the digital future.
