The company strengthens its global expansion strategy with the acquisition of a site in Montreal, set to be operational in May 2025, featuring state-of-the-art technology and 100% renewable energy.
Bit Digital, Inc., a company specializing in high-performance computing (HPC) infrastructure and digital asset production, has announced the acquisition of a building in Pointe-Claire, Montreal, Canada, to develop a data centerA data center or data processing center (DPC) … with 5MW Tier-3 standards. This project is part of its expansion strategy to reach a total capacity of 32MW by 2025.
Acquisition Details and Project Development
The new site, known as “MTL2,” is a 160,000 square foot facility that previously operated as an encapsulation factory. Bit Digital acquired the property for CA$33.5 million (approximately US$23.3 million) and plans to invest an additional CA$27.6 million (US$19.3 million) to upgrade the facility to Tier-3 standards.
The center will feature:
- Advanced cooling technology: Includes direct-to-chip liquid cooling systems to support high-density workloads with racks of up to 150kW.
- Renewable energy: To be powered by 100% renewable hydroelectricity provided by Hydro-Quebec.
- Enhanced sustainability: Bit Digital will implement a heat rejection system to maximize energy efficiency.
The facility, scheduled to become operational in May 2025, also offers expansion capacity, allowing scalable growth according to market demands.
A Strategic Bet for Growth
Sam Tabar, CEO of Bit Digital, emphasized the importance of this acquisition:
“This class A property, located in one of Montreal’s most coveted commercial areas, allows us to leverage existing infrastructure, including HVAC equipment valued at over CA$750,000. This reduces development costs and accelerates our time to market, which is crucial to meet the demand from new clients seeking capacity with state-of-the-art Nvidia GPUs.”
Tabar also highlighted that the company is working to secure cost-effective mortgage financing for the project, minimizing the dilution of its financial resources.
Impact on the HPC Market and Sustainability
With this expansion, Bit Digital reinforces its position in the high-performance computing market and demonstrates its commitment to sustainability by operating exclusively with renewable energy. This approach not only reduces its carbon footprint but also positions the company as a strategic partner for businesses requiring efficient and responsible solutions for their AI and advanced computing needs.
The new center in Montreal is part of a broader pipeline of 288MW of owned capacity announced by the company earlier this year. This strategic growth responds to the increasing demand for HPC infrastructure driven by artificial intelligence applications, cryptocurrency mining, and other intensive workloads.
Bit Digital: A Growing Company
Since its founding, Bit Digital has solidified its presence in key markets such as the United States, Canada, and Iceland. Currently, the company combines its expertise in Bitcoin mining with a forward-looking vision focused on scalable and sustainable infrastructure solutions for high-density workloads.
The acquisition of “MTL2” marks a significant step in its global expansion strategy, positioning Bit Digital as a leader in the transition towards a more sustainable and technologically advanced future in the realm of high-performance computing.
