BeDisruptive, a technological boutique specialized in cybersecurity, has launched a highly innovative project for the European Union focused on the early detection of cybersecurity attacks and supply chain risks in industrial environments. The project ‘Early Warning System for Critical Infrastructures’ has been funded by the Digital Europe Programme and is endorsed by the European Cybersecurity Competence Centre.
The main objective of the project is to promote the development of a strong cybersecurity infrastructure across Europe, fostering the evolution of cybersecurity in the global industrial environment.
According to David Marco, Global Industrial Cybersecurity Director at BeDisruptive: “This project benefits the core of the European economic landscape: small and medium enterprises, which represent 99% of the total businesses in the EU. Despite their fundamental role, these companies often face cybersecurity without a specific budget, posing a risk when protecting the interaction between information and telecommunications systems. Our goal with the Early Warning System for Critical Infrastructures is clear: democratize the protection of information and communication technologies, empowering SMEs to safeguard their digital assets against potential adverse effects.”
David Marco adds: “The Early Warning System for Critical Infrastructures is a disruptive, innovative, and extremely necessary research project to try to stay one step ahead in preventing possible attacks on critical infrastructures in the EU, effectively assisting the Computer Security Incident Response Teams (CSIRTs) that protect these industrial environments.”
Specifically, the project is based on characterizing critical infrastructure to create a hybrid and adaptive digital twin model. This model integrates physical process control components with digital elements exposed to the Internet, creating a system capable of deceiving attackers into believing it is a real environment and thus revealing itself at an early reconnaissance stage. One of the unique features of the system is its ability to be present through virtualized networks in various Internet locations.
The implementation of the Early Warning System for Critical Infrastructures is based on real information provided by process experts and automation and control engineers. The system meticulously records all movements of attackers, including industrial protocol-level conversations, during all phases of an attack on critical infrastructures. The project also involves training data with context-based security algorithms for the characterized infrastructure.
“It is a comprehensive, meticulous, and precise project that directly extracts intelligence about real threats and reflects BeDisruptive’s firm commitment to cybersecurity research, an area in which we will continue to work with determination and perseverance,” emphasizes David Marco. “All of this is what ensures that this project remains a reference and stays at the forefront of cybersecurity in industrial environments in Europe.”
