AVAIO Digital Launches 64 MW Data Center Campus in Algete, Ready for the AI Era

AVAIO Digital has announced a significant advancement in the development of its first data center in Spain, a 64 MW project strategically located in Algete, right in Madrid’s northern tech corridor. With an investment of 650 million euros, the company aims to position the Community of Madrid as one of Europe’s key hubs for cloud computing and artificial intelligence (AI).

This new campus, called AVAIO Digital Scorpio, will not only be equipped to handle hyper-scale workloads and high-performance computing but will also focus on sustainability and energy efficiency to meet the rising demands of hyperscalers and the digital economy.

A boost to Madrid’s tech ecosystem

Algete’s location is no coincidence. The project fits within Madrid’s northern data center axis, which already hosts strong nodes in Alcobendas and Alcalá de Henares, establishing itself as a strategic digital corridor. Low-latency connectivity to these hubs and the national fiber network will enable the new center to provide direct links to major data markets across Spain, continental Europe, and international markets via submarine cable landing points in the country.

Mark McComiskey, CEO of AVAIO Digital, emphasized the region’s appeal:

“Madrid is a leading European center for cloud computing and AI development. Spain offers a unique opportunity for hyperscalers to rapidly expand their digital presence in a highly sustainable manner.”

Energy security for the future

A key element of the project is energy supply assurance. AVAIO Digital has secured 56.3 MW of clean energy through an agreement with Iberdrola, complementing the initial 8 MW already contracted. Energy delivery is scheduled for 2028, allowing for phased operational scaling.

Clean energy is not the only sustainability focus. The campus design will include:

  • Rainwater reuse
  • Solar energy on rooftops
  • An efficient air-based cooling system that minimizes water use
  • Low environmental impact architecture on a former industrial site

Pedro Blanco, AVAIO Digital’s project manager in Spain, highlighted the sustainable approach:

“This project contributes to the respectful reurbanization of an industrial space and reinforces Algete as a new key point in Europe’s data center map.”

Economic and employment impact

Building the AVAIO Digital Scorpio is expected to create over 500 direct jobs during construction and around 50 permanent positions once operational. These roles will attract local talent and specialists, fostering training in critical infrastructure management, cloud operations, and advanced cooling systems.

Additionally, the project will serve as a hub for cloud services, AI, and telecommunications providers, creating a multiplier effect in the regional economy.

A model aligned with the growing AI and HPC demand

AVAIO Digital designed this campus to meet the needs of increasingly intensive workloads, such as generative AI, big data analytics, and high-performance computing (HPC). The company already has over 2 GW of secured energy for projects in the U.S. and Western Europe, positioning it as a major player in the next-generation global data center market.

Its strategy includes using behind-the-meter energy to optimize costs and cut carbon footprint, along with modular designs that allow adaptation to technological evolution and client-specific needs.

Madrid: a burgeoning market

Madrid has become one of Europe’s fastest-growing data center markets, thanks to its strategic location, telecommunications infrastructure, and foreign investment. According to Data Centre Magazine, Spain’s data center market will grow at double digits over the next five years, driven by new submarine cables, hyperscaler expansion, and business digitization.

AVAIO Digital joins a growing list of companies viewing Madrid as a privileged gateway to Southern Europe and Latin America, leveraging its international connectivity and favorable regulatory environment for tech projects.
