Amazon Boosts Its Cloud Infrastructure in Aragón with a $1.5 Million Investment in Electrical Connection for Its Data Center in Walqa

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has launched a new strategic phase in expanding its digital infrastructure in Spain. The American multinational will invest €1.47 million to build a 1.4-kilometer underground power line to supply the data center currently under construction in the Walqa Technology Park, in Huesca. This investment is part of a large-scale project totaling €714.6 million, which includes the creation of five new data centers in Aragón—two in El Burgo de Ebro, two in Villanueva de Gállego, and this one in Huesca city.

The power line will connect the data center to the substation at the Huesca Logistics Platform (Plhus), crossing key infrastructure such as the A-23 Highway and N-330 Road through horizontal directional drilling techniques. The cable will be medium voltage at 15 kV, double-circuit, with completion expected in three months after public consultation and regulatory approvals.

In addition to the electrical connection, AWS is deploying state-of-the-art fiber optic cables necessary to integrate the Walqa center into its Aragón cloud region, which will operate as a network of eight interconnected facilities. This architecture will enable Amazon to manage data in a distributed and resilient manner, maximizing the availability and scalability of its cloud services across Europe.

The Walqa complex will include five buildings dedicated to data storage and processing, situated across approximately 70 hectares between the technology park and adjoining land. Construction has already begun, including the demolition of old structures, some of which were carefully removed due to containing asbestos.

The electrical infrastructure is part of Aragón’s General Interest Plan (PIGA) for AWS expansion, which streamlines the permits process. The company requested inclusion in this plan on May 12, strengthening its commitment to Aragón as a strategic hub for European cloud services.

AWS centers in Aragón serve not only customers in Spain but also form part of the infrastructure supporting millions of users and companies across Europe, enabling the deployment of critical applications, data storage, and AI model training.

While countries like Germany, the Netherlands, and France are strengthening their technological sovereignty through the creation of sovereign cloud regions, Aragón’s project stands out for its administrative speed, access to public land, and institutional support. Unlike large European projects that involve state infrastructure or public-private consortia, AWS’s investment in Aragón follows a direct investment model, offering immediate economic impact and tax benefits associated with industrial and tech zones.

The total investment in AWS’s Huesca project amounts to €714.6 million, with expectations of creating hundreds of direct and indirect jobs during construction and operation. This deployment also positions Walqa as a crucial node in Spain’s digital economy, attracting potential investments from tech companies and startups interested in top-tier cloud infrastructure.

Through this initiative, Aragón enhances its role as a digital hub in southern Europe, leveraging its strategic location, renewable energy availability, high-speed fiber optics, and active policies to attract technological investment.

AWS continues to consolidate itself as one of the major cloud players in Europe, with increasingly close, efficient, and critical infrastructure for Spain’s business and digital landscape.
