Amazon bets $30 billion on AI infrastructure in the U.S. with new investments in data centers.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced a historic investment of over $30 billion in new data centers in Pennsylvania and North Carolina, reaffirming its leadership in the global race for artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud computing.

Record Investments in Two Key Regions

The announcement includes $20 billion earmarked for the creation of "AI innovation campuses" in Salem and Falls Townships, Pennsylvania, as well as another $10 billion to enhance data center capacity in Richmond County, North Carolina. These figures make both projects the largest private tech investments in the history of their respective states.

AWS’s strategy responds to a national trend: large cloud providers ("hyperscalers") are accelerating the deployment of AI-optimized infrastructures in emerging and rural markets, prioritizing access to land, energy, and talent. In 2024 alone, global capital spending by these giants exceeded $240 billion, largely driven by demand for infrastructures for generative AI and advanced models.

Pennsylvania: AI Epicenter with Economic Impact

In Pennsylvania, the $20 billion investment represents the largest private undertaking in the state’s history. The new AWS campuses will result in the creation of 1,250 highly skilled jobs and provide a boost to thousands more in construction and supply chain-related sectors.

The state government is already collaborating with AWS to identify new sites and create a regional AI innovation corridor, supported by robust electrical infrastructure and public-private partnerships. Additionally, Amazon is committed to sustainability, launching 12 solar parks and onsite solar projects to power its new centers.

North Carolina: The New Tech Hub of the Southeast

AWS’s expansion in North Carolina, valued at $10 billion, focuses on Richmond County, where at least 500 direct jobs will be generated, establishing a technological innovation hub for the entire Southeastern U.S. Since 2010, Amazon’s total investment in the state has already surpassed $22 billion.

The region’s appeal lies in its combination of land availability, advanced electrical infrastructure, and an expanding fiber-optic network—essential factors for today’s AI and cloud needs.

Beyond Infrastructure: Investment in Talent and Community

A distinctive element of this new wave of investment is the strong commitment to local training and employment. AWS has launched pre-apprenticeship programs in information infrastructure, scholarships, technical courses, and workshops for educators, aligning regional training with the profiles demanded in the tech industry.

In North Carolina, high school students have already received $40,000 scholarships for STEM careers, while in Pennsylvania, community funds have been created to support educational, sustainability, and digital inclusion projects.
