A report by Cloudflare shows how the competition disrupted usual traffic patterns in numerous countries, virtually changing the digital behavior of millions of people in real time.

The company, which operates one of the largest Internet distribution and security networks in the world, analyzed billions of requests recorded during the tournament. The result is a snapshot of how a global event can alter when and how users access the web, generating traffic spikes, drops, and even repetitive behaviors during the matches themselves.

One of the most notable data points occurred during the final. Argentina and Spain experienced increases of up to 20 percentage points in traffic volume compared to an equivalent period, reflecting the enormous interest generated by the decisive match among fans.

Among all the countries analyzed, Argentina experienced the greatest impact on its digital activity.

Cloudflare compared the usual traffic of each country with the traffic recorded during its national team’s matches and concluded that Argentina topped the global ranking. Throughout the tournament, traffic diverted from its normal behavior an average of 17%, a figure higher than any other participating country.

This behavior highlights how major sporting events can significantly modify connection habits when they generate massive followings.

The match with the greatest impact wasn’t the final

According to the report, the biggest change occurred during the quarterfinal between Argentina and Switzerland, which caused a greater variation than even the semifinal between France and Spain.

Late-night match times shattered all patterns

Cloudflare detected that the largest traffic fluctuations happened during matches played between midnight and 8 a.m. local time, a period when Internet activity is usually much lower.

Rather than reducing online activity, broadcasting these matches kept millions awake or prompted early rising to follow the tournament, pushing traffic far above normal levels. In some countries, activity even doubled compared to a normal day.

Breaks also left their mark

The report also identifies distinct behavior during matches.

Hydration breaks, lasting only a few minutes, produced small traffic spikes that were nearly synchronized. Many viewers took advantage of this brief pause to check messages, access social media, review stats, or browse other pages before the match resumed.

This pattern, repeated across many matches, demonstrates how even very short interruptions can be visibly reflected in overall Internet activity when millions perform the same action simultaneously.

Increased traffic to betting platforms

Besides sports content consumption, Cloudflare observed sustained growth in traffic to betting portals throughout the tournament.

The largest increases were in Iran and several Latin American countries, where requests directed to these platforms grew as the competition progressed and decisive matches arrived.

This trend shows how the digital ecosystem surrounding a major sports event extends well beyond broadcasting matches, involving multiple online services related to tournament tracking.
