Sarenet, a provider specialized in voice, data, and hosting services for businesses, has launched its new data center at the Derio Communications Hub, located in the Euskadi Technology Park. This facility, built with an investment of 20 million euros, is one of the company’s most significant projects in its over 30 years of operation.
The new data center is situated at one of the main connectivity points in northern Spain, with direct access to international fiber optic networks. It has been designed to meet the growing demands for capacity, performance, and availability of companies.
The infrastructure features 3 megawatts of electrical power and can house up to 340 racks, providing over 99.98% uptime—aligning with Tier III data center quality and reliability standards.
One of the key highlights of this project is its focus on energy efficiency. It includes its own photovoltaic plant and cooling systems based on free cooling technology, which utilizes outdoor environmental conditions to reduce energy consumption associated with climate control.
Additionally, the center is equipped with state-of-the-art servers with optimized processors to deliver high performance while minimizing energy use, contributing to a more sustainable operation.
The facility is designed with the goal of achieving LEED Gold certification, one of the leading international standards for sustainable construction. Furthermore, Sarenet is part of the Climate Neutral Data Centre Pact (CNDCP), a European initiative promoting environmental impact reduction and climate neutrality within the data center industry.
Intended to host critical services with the highest levels of availability and resilience, the new site will also enable advanced capabilities such as dynamic network segmentation, DDoS attack protection, and managed cybersecurity services, strengthening technological resilience for organizations in critical scenarios.
Ultimately, this new center will allow the company to strengthen its technological offerings in connectivity, cloud, cybersecurity, AI, and data spaces, providing a nearby, specialized, and flexible alternative to the standardized models of major international hyperscale providers.
A commitment to proximity in a market dominated by global giants
In a context where much of the digital infrastructure is concentrated in the hands of large international operators, Sarenet advocates a model based on proximity, operational control, and specialized attention.
This infrastructure allows for comprehensive control over client services and data, reducing dependence on third parties and ensuring that information remains under the company’s direct management. This approach is especially relevant for organizations seeking greater guarantees of digital sovereignty, regulatory compliance, and business continuity.
Compared to highly standardized models, the new center will enable tailored solutions for each project, with specialized technical support, low latency, and a local response capacity—key differentiators for Sarenet.
“This initiative enhances our ability to offer small and medium-sized enterprises an integrated technological solution that combines connectivity, infrastructure hosting, cybersecurity, and specialized engineering services. This approach enables medium and small businesses to access advanced, innovative technologies backed by local, dedicated technical support,” states Jon Arberas, CEO of Sarenet.
The company also emphasizes the value of its own infrastructure, managed entirely by its team. “This provides greater control over service quality, guarantees high reliability levels, and offers the flexibility needed to adapt to future client needs and technological market developments,” concludes Arberas.
At the inauguration, Ainara Basurko, Deputy for Economic Promotion of the Bizkaia Provincial Council, highlighted that “Bizkaia is investing in enabling technologies such as artificial intelligence, quantum computing, and supercomputing, with the aim of bringing them closer to industry and preparing our economic fabric for the coming years.” She also emphasized that “Sarenet demonstrates that from Bizkaia we develop critical digital infrastructure. We don’t just consume technology; we build our own capabilities. We can compete with advanced proposals of high added value, based on technical knowledge, specialization, and trust.”
AI focused on business needs and data sovereignty
Sarenet is committed to an AI approach aimed at solving specific business needs, contrasting with large generalist models that require enormous infrastructure. The company believes there is a gap between the technology’s potential and its actual application in the business environment, hence working on specialized solutions that automate processes more accurately, efficiently, and reliably.
The new Sarenet data center is prepared to host such AI projects, providing organizations with a secure and scalable infrastructure without relying on the extensive resources of global giants.
Moreover, the company highlights the importance of data sovereignty in AI development. It ensures that client information remains under their control, hosted on European infrastructure and protected by EU regulations, safeguarding privacy, security, and regulatory compliance.
Steady growth and a commitment to innovation
The opening of the new center coincides with a sustained growth period for the company. Sarenet closed 2023 with revenues exceeding 28 million euros and an increase in profitability of over 6%. The firm currently employs 140 professionals and works with over 400 partners across the country, accounting for nearly 40% of the company’s revenue.
Innovation remains a strategic pillar for Sarenet. Its R&D investments reached €2 million in 2023, representing 6% of turnover—a new record for the company.
The launch of this new data center marks a significant step in Sarenet’s evolution from its beginnings—when internet deployment in Euskadi was just starting—to a specialized operator capable of designing and managing cutting-edge critical infrastructures.
At the same time, the company believes this infrastructure will reinforce Euskadi’s position as a strategic digital hub for cloud services, AI, international connectivity, and advanced technological projects.
With this inauguration, Sarenet reaffirms its commitment to a technological model based on specialization, innovation, and proximity, providing companies with an infrastructure prepared to meet the challenges of the upcoming digital decade.
