Apple has confirmed the acquisition of Q.ai, an Israeli startup specializing in artificial intelligence applied to audio. The key isn’t so much the size of the check as the technological promise the company brings: systems capable of interpreting whispered speech and, more notably, inferring “silent speech” from facial signals. If the concept sounds like science fiction, it’s because it’s approaching a significant interface shift: communicating with an assistant without speaking, in noisy environments or situations where voice is problematic (privacy, accessibility, open offices, public transit).

According to Reuters, Q.ai is working on AI technologies for audio, including the ability to interpret whispered speech and enhance sound in difficult environments. Practically, the most evident fit is in two product categories: headphones (AirPods and derivatives) and “spatial computing” devices (Vision Pro and future products).
