Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced the general availability of Amazon Elastic VMware Service (EVS), a new solution that allows organizations to quickly and easily run their VMware workloads directly on AWS infrastructure without needing to rewrite applications or modify existing configurations.
With Amazon EVS, companies can migrate their VMware Cloud Foundation environment to AWS cloud without changing IP addresses, retraining their technical teams, or rebuilding operational procedures. The platform preserves familiar tools and practices for VMware administrators while offering the scalability, security, and resilience that AWS provides.
“Amazon Elastic VMware Service offers a straightforward way to bring VMware workloads to AWS using familiar tools and frictionless processes. It’s a commitment to agility, cost reduction, and accelerated innovation,” said Steven Jones, General Manager of Commercial Applications at AWS.
Compatibility, flexibility, and performance
Amazon EVS enables the operation of VMware Cloud Foundation within Amazon VPC (Virtual Private Cloud), giving customers full control over their infrastructure and seamless integration with advanced AWS services like Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP, Amazon Bedrock, or Amazon Q for Business. The service is already available in several regions, including the US, Europe, and Asia-Pacific.
One of the key benefits of this service is its compatibility with portable VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) licenses, allowing customers to maximize their prior investments and avoid additional licensing costs.
Global adoption by businesses and governments
Organizations across various sectors are already using Amazon EVS to migrate their VMware workloads:
Cali City Hall (Colombia): migrated to AWS in just three weeks, keeping 75% of their workloads on VMware. The solution enabled continuous operation of essential public services such as healthcare, education, and tax collection.
Aeroméxico: considers Amazon EVS a critical element in its application modernization process, avoiding additional investments in local infrastructure.
Huron Consulting Group: highlights the service’s flexibility for configuring hybrid environments and leveraging their teams’ VMware expertise without sacrificing cloud benefits.
Effectual: uses EVS to accelerate the migration and modernization processes for their clients without needing to redo applications or alter workflows.
A proposal aligned with Broadcom
The partnership between AWS and Broadcom, VMware’s parent company, strengthens the service’s positioning. According to Ahmar Mohammad, Vice President of VMware Cloud Foundation at Broadcom, “Amazon EVS extends modern private cloud environments to AWS, maintaining a consistent and unified infrastructure while providing efficiency and flexibility to customers.”
Availability and outlook
Amazon EVS is now available in Ohio, Northern Virginia, Oregon, Dublin, Frankfurt, and Tokyo, with plans to expand to new regions in the coming months. The offering is shaping up to be one of the most robust options for companies aiming to accelerate their cloud transition without abandoning their traditional VMware environments.
Through this initiative, AWS reinforces its leadership in the cloud ecosystem, betting on seamless hybrid integration that can be key for millions of enterprises with legacy VMware workloads.
