The new version expands support for Arm architectures, strengthens data protection, and reduces vendor lock-in in cloud-native environments.
SUSE, globally recognized for its open-source enterprise solutions, has announced the general availability of SUSE Virtualization 1.5 Prime, a significant evolution of its virtualization platform designed to adapt to the new cloud-native environments. With this release, the company addresses the growing demand from organizations for flexibility, scalability, and technological independence, enabling them to modernize their infrastructure without disruptions.
“The market increasingly demands predictability, innovation, and freedom of choice. With SUSE Virtualization, we offer an open, future-ready solution free from technological constraints,” said Peter Smails, senior vice president and general manager of Cloud Native at SUSE.
Multi-architecture support and energy efficiency
One of the most notable advancements in this version is full, production-grade support for 64-bit Arm® processors, in addition to traditional x86 support. This capability allows for parallel workload execution, which is especially beneficial in sectors like artificial intelligence, telecommunications, and edge computing, where performance and energy efficiency are critical. According to Andrew Wafaa, senior director of software communities at Arm, “This support for Arm will provide more options, efficiency, and scalability while reducing complexity and costs.”
An optimized lifecycle for DevOps teams
SUSE has implemented a predictable enterprise release cycle every four months, aligned with Kubernetes development, enabling DevOps teams to plan more accurately. Additionally, the flexible update process allows users to jump between minor versions without rework, integrating hotfixes directly into each release.
Certified data protection
Version 1.5 Prime introduces the new SUSE Certified Data Protection for Virtualization certification, ensuring compatibility and performance of third-party backup, restore, and disaster recovery solutions. This certification guarantees seamless integration with SUSE APIs and supports secure backup operations, even in hybrid and multi-cloud environments.
Enterprise storage integration
SUSE Virtualization enhances its compatibility with leading storage providers. Thanks to validated CSI driver support from vendors like Dell, NetApp, HPE, Oracle, and Portworx, companies can confidently use their existing solutions, ensuring critical workloads run smoothly without compromising compliance or security.
Open architecture and dependency-free design
True to its open-source philosophy, the platform is built on a fully open-source foundation, with transparent licenses, accessible APIs, and no opaque components. This grants organizations complete control over their tech stack, encouraging autonomous innovation and easy portability across environments.
Success story: Child Rescue Coalition
One of the most impactful examples of SUSE Virtualization is the Child Rescue Coalition (CRC), a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting minors. Through automated workload management with SUSE Virtualization and Rancher Prime, their small team operates with the efficiency of a much larger organization. “Automation is our force multiplier,” highlighted Roberto Machorro, senior developer at CRC.
A unified vision from core to edge
SUSE Virtualization is a key component of the SUSE Rancher Prime platform, aiming to provide a secure, scalable, and flexible infrastructure for modern enterprises. From data centers to the edge, SUSE’s approach is designed to meet current and future digital transformation challenges.
