Siemens Smart Infrastructure has announced a strategic partnership with Microsoft aimed at transforming IoT data access and integration within smart building environments. This collaboration will enable interoperability between Building X, Siemens’ digital platform, and Azure IoT Operations from Microsoft, powered by Azure Arc.
Thanks to this integration, organizations will be able to reduce up to 80% of integration efforts, optimize building performance, and make progress toward their sustainability goals.
The interoperability between Building X and Azure IoT Operations provides real-time data access for large enterprise clients in sectors such as commercial buildings, data centers, and higher education institutions. Sensors and devices like HVAC systems, valves, or actuators will automatically send data on temperature, pressure, or air quality to the cloud. This facilitates the development of customized use cases, including energy monitoring and space optimization.
“This partnership with Microsoft reflects our shared vision of unleashing the full potential of IoT through open standards and interoperability,” said Susanne Seitz, CEO of Siemens Smart Infrastructure Buildings. “Enhanced data access will allow portfolio managers to gain more detailed insights into critical metrics like energy consumption and operational efficiency.”
IoT Without Vendor Restrictions
A key aspect of the agreement is the ability to integrate Siemens hardware and software without relying on a closed ecosystem, thanks to a flexible and open IoT architecture. Single-click device onboarding and efficient data exchange give customers full freedom to design their own IoT architectures.
The project is based on widely recognized open standards such as the W3C’s Web of Things (WoT) and the Open Platform Communications Unified Architecture (OPC UA). Both partners are active members of the W3C and the OPC Foundation, organizations promoting accessibility, security, and interoperability in industry.
Market Launch
Interoperability between Building X and Azure IoT Operations will be commercially available in the second half of 2025.
“Siemens shares Microsoft’s commitment to interoperability and open standards in IoT,” stated Erich Barnstedt, Senior Director of the corporate standards group at Microsoft. “This advancement is a key step toward making IoT data more accessible and useful for organizations.”
Building X and Siemens Xcelerator
Building X is a digital platform for comprehensive building management, allowing clients to digitize, monitor, and optimize their operations, supporting the transition toward more sustainable, autonomous, and profitable infrastructure. It is part of Siemens Xcelerator, Siemens’ open digital platform that accelerates digital transformation for companies worldwide.
