Mercadona to Invest 20 Million Euros in Upgrading Its Data Processing Centers to Strengthen Its Digital Transformation

The chain modernizes its Data Processing Centers in Valencia and León as part of its ambitious Digital Excellence Plan 2025-2028.

Mercadona has announced an investment of 20 million euros aimed at the complete renovation of its two main Data Processing Centers (DPCs), located in Albalat dels Sorells (Valencia) and Villadangos del Páramo (León). The work, which is already underway, will be completed in 2026 and is part of the digital modernization strategy that the supermarket chain is pursuing within its Digital Excellence Plan.

These centers are a key component for the operation of Mercadona, as they manage over 300 core applications that enable, among other functions, sales consolidation, centralized stock management for stores and warehouses, order forecasting, purchasing from suppliers, and coordinating daily logistics for over 1,670 supermarkets across Spain.

“In the DPCs, most operations are executed in real-time, making them a critical infrastructure to ensure the opening and smooth operation of all stores every day,” said Juanjo López, the company’s Coordinator of Security and IT Infrastructure.

### A Distributed Model with Guaranteed Resilience

In addition to the two major data centers being renovated, Mercadona has smaller DPCs in each of its 17 logistics blocks. This distributed architecture allows the facilities to remain operational even in the event of disconnections from the main centers. This approach ensures business continuity in unforeseen situations, enabling each logistics block to continue functioning autonomously.

### Step-by-Step Modernization

The renovation of the DPCs is currently in the phase of installing new equipment, following the completion of technical design and hardware acquisition. This process is being carried out alongside the operations of the existing centers to ensure that company operations are not interrupted. The migration of applications to the new technological platforms is expected to take place in 2026.

This modernization is part of the Digital Excellence Plan 2025-2028 that Mercadona presented earlier this year, equipped with over 250 million euros. Through this initiative, the company reinforces its commitment to internal technological development, aiming to improve efficiency, system security, and real-time responsiveness to business needs.

### IT as a Strategic Engine

The Mercadona IT division has established itself in recent years as a key structure within the company’s business model. Its mission is clear: to lead the internal digital transformation process, optimizing processes, automating operations, and ensuring a robust and scalable technological infrastructure.

With this investment in its data centers, Mercadona takes another step to ensure the competitiveness of its technological infrastructure and its ability to adapt to an increasingly digitalized and demanding environment.
